The two were working to replace a defective battery charge / discharge unit, known as BCDU.

The station depends on solar energy, but it is out of direct sunlight for much of its orbit and, therefore, needs batteries, and the BCDU regulates the amount of charge that enters them.

The current task was announced on Monday and is part of a broader mission to replace the old nickel-hydrogen batteries with larger-capacity lithium-ion units.

The United States sent its first female astronaut to space in 1983, when Sally Ride participated in the seventh space shuttle mission, and has now had more female astronauts than any other country.

But the first woman in space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, followed by her compatriot Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982, who was also the first woman to walk the space two years later.

Ken Bowersox, interim associate administrator at NASA, said he hoped that a spacewalk for women would soon be a "routine" matter that would not require celebration.

When asked why it had taken so long, Meir is the 14th spacewalker of women in the US. UU., He said that the additional height of the men provided an advantage. "There have been many spacewalks where very tall men are the ones who could do the job because they could reach and do things a little more easily," he said.

"But we have also brought women to the crews, because of their brains, right; they come in and bring different skills, they think about things in different ways. And by using their brains, they can overcome many of those physical challenges."

NASA plans to return to the Moon in 2024 for the first time since the Apollo landing of 1969-1972. The new mission is called Artemis, in honor of Apollo's twin sister in Greek mythology.

The mission will see the first woman to step on the lunar surface, probably as part of a man-woman combination, while the space agency looks forward to a manned expedition to Mars in the 2030s.

Published on Dawn, October 19, 2019

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1511669/us-makes-history-with-first-all-female-spacewalk-team

This photo provided by NASA shows astronauts Andrew Morgan (center), Christina Koch and Jessica Meir inside the International Space Station.
