On April 23, 2018, thousands of white supremacists came down to the sleepy town of Ostritz along the German-Polish border and attended the right-most festival called Shield and Sword. I did. Right attractions, clothing stalls promoting the products on the right, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) tournaments hosted by Kampf der Nibelungen (KdN), Germany's right-most MMA promotion. <\/p>\n

To celebrate Adolf Hitler's birthday, the festival emphasized how neo-Nazis in Europe used music, merchandise sales, and violent combat sports like MMA as recruiting tools to spread their hate ideology. Hundreds of young and white supremacists gathered to celebrate the climax weekend at the MMA show designed specifically for Neo Nazi and their supporters. Not only did Germany ban the holocaust's wife, he also noted the obvious display of Nazi symbolism. This means that it is a matter of time before they notice the festival. <\/p>\n

Concerned about the neo-Nazi activities going on in their cities, Ostritz authorities decided to ruin the Neo-Nazi festival by limiting their entire attendance by confiscating all alcohol on the premises in 2019. The officers arrived at the site and seized more than 4000 liters of beer on the first day and 200 liters the next morning. The alcohol ban ensured minimal violence at the festival and canceled the Kampf der Nibelungen's annual showcase event. <\/p>\n

It was expected that the event would be held again on October 12, 2019, while the alcohol ban was canceling this year's Battle of Nibelung at the & # 39; Sword and Shield & # 39; Festival. The event tickets were sold through KdN and promoted through a website as a 12-time fighting show featuring competitors from across Europe in kickboxing, boxing and MMA contests. <\/p>\n

The event was once again scheduled for Ostritz. But this time local authorities were prepared. <\/p>\n

In early October 2019, German officials banned KdN's event in the village of Ostritz, stating that it did not have a sporting event, but was mainly used for "right wing extreme combat training". Bautzen's Higher Administrative Court later complained about lifting the ban on organizers, stating that the "public interest in securing the basic order of free democracy" is higher than the organization's economic interests. The court also noted that the combat techniques used by armed combat clubs could be countered by German police. As a result, the show on October 12 did not open. <\/p>\n

The prohibition by the courts is an important victory in Germany's ongoing struggle against neo-Nazi extremism, but it is never a decisive blow to promotions or to the far right of the state. <\/p>\n

Kampf der Nibelungen is one of Europe's most famous far-right combat sports promotions and is constantly connected with other far-right organizations throughout Europe and North America. For example, the KdN relationship with the founder Denis Nikitin of White Rex taught us how to integrate into the expanded neo-Nazi network in Europe and Russia and organize MMA events in Germany. This allowed KdN to expand its reach and connect with other right-wing armed combat clubs in the area. With this support system, KdN will find a new home for the MMA show. <\/p>\n

In addition to serving as an MMA promotion, KdN is following in the footsteps of Nikitin's White Rex by becoming a lifestyle brand. The Facebook page is set up as a brand, not an organization, and most posts promote White Rex's products, including t-shirts, hoodies, and even tea cups. The product is decorated with words such as "discipline" and "winner" with the Kampf der Nibelungen name or logo, which allows the brand to be normalized in public places, allowing the followers to identify themselves and mobilize when necessary. <\/p>\n

KdN is not the only Neo Nazi MMA promotion that exists in Germany. According to the TIWAZ website, the event is associated with brands such as Pd France, Wardon, such as KdN and other pride clubs. 21 and Sonnenkruez. Another armed fight club is the German MMA team Imperium Fight Team, which caused hate and riots in Wurzen and Chemnitz in 2018. One of their main coaches is former UFC fighter Benjamin Brinsa. Claimed to be a neo-Nazi sympathizer. Despite his fame, Brinsa was elected to Wurzen's city council as part of \u201cWurzen's New Forum\u201d (NFW). <\/p>\n

Considering the impact of mixed martial arts as a recruitment tool and networking opportunity for the Shin Nazi group, the court's ban on the right MMA case is an important step in the right direction.
