President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that threats of sanctions and arms embargoes by Western powers would not stop Turkey's military offensive against Kurdish militants in Syria.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter launching our operation, we face threats such as economic sanctions and embargoes on arms sales. Those who believe they can make Turkey back off with these threats are seriously wrong, "Erdogan said in a televised speech.<\/p>\n
France and Germany had said on Saturday they were suspending arms exports to Turkey for their offensive in Syria against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).<\/p>\n
Turkey sees the YPG as a terrorist attack by Kurdish rebels in its own territory, but Western powers used the Kurds as the main land force against the militant group of the Islamic State.<\/p>\n
Erdogan said he spoke on the phone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday and raised the issue of the arms embargo.<\/p>\n
\u201cI told him to explain it to me. Are we really allies in the heart of NATO, or has the terrorist group (YPG) been accepted into NATO without me being informed? ", Said.<\/p>\n
He also rejected the idea of \u200b\u200bany mediation between Turkey and the YPG.<\/p>\n
"When did you see a state sitting at the same table with a terrorist group?" He said.<\/p>\n
Erdogan said the Turkish army and its Syrian representatives now controlled the border town of Ras al-Ain, while Tal Abyad was being besieged from two directions.<\/p>\n
German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday to immediately stop Turkey's offensive in northern Syria, warning that it could lead to further destabilization of the region and a resurgence of the militant group IS.<\/p>\n
In a phone call with Erdogan, Merkel "spoke in favor of the immediate end of the military operation," the chancellor's office said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The operation threatens to expel much of the population from their homes, he said, noting that it would also run the risk of "destabilizing the region and leading to a resurgence of IS."<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/pre>\n<\/pre>\n
