Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India on Friday for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a time of tensions over Beijing joining Pakistan to oppose the degradation of the autonomy of Kashmir occupied by the India and the ongoing blockade in the disputed region.<\/p>\n
Xi landed at Chennai airport, where Tamil Nadu state governor Banwarilal Purohit greeted him with a bouquet of flowers while a cultural group played the drums and blew the horns.<\/p>\n The Foreign Ministry of India said that Xi and Modi will meet in the coastal city of Mamallapuram to discuss regional and global developments later on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n His individual meeting in Wuhan in China in April last year was also preceded by tensions caused by a 10-week confrontation between his armed forces on the Bhutan border.<\/p>\n China claims about 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) of territory in northeastern India, while India says that China occupies 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of its territory on the Aksai Chin plateau in the western Himalayas. Officials have met at least 20 times to discuss competing border claims without making significant progress.<\/p>\n The two countries fought a bloody border war in 1962. <\/p>\n India is also concerned about China's movements to build strategic and economic ties with its neighbors Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Maldives.<\/p>\n Tensions in occupied Kashmir have intensified since August, when India lowered its autonomy and imposed a security and communications blockade.<\/p>\n China supported Pakistan to raise India's actions at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. China said India should not act unilaterally in Kashmir.<\/p>\n Xi arrived two days after receiving Prime Minister Imran Khan in Beijing.<\/p>\n India insists that Jammu and Kashmir are an integral part of India. \u201cChina is very aware of our position. It is not for other countries to comment on the internal affairs of India, "the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India said in a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n Lalit Mansingh, a former Indian ambassador to the United States, said he expected an overview of bilateral relations between the two leaders and "give instructions on how the relationship should proceed."<\/p>\n He said the diplomatic damage that the Chinese inflicted by India's action in Kashmir has already been done.<\/p>\n For its part, China is bothered that India is the host of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.<\/p>\n China says that Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries, although many Tibetans say they were essentially independent for most of that time.
