Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, during Khan's last visit to Saudi Arabia, asked him to help calm tensions with Iran, since Saudi Arabia wanted to avoid war.

Read: Prime Minister Imran says he is mediating with Iran after Trump asked for help

The Iranians have expressed their willingness to accept the offer, but have conditioned it to the United States and other Western forces leaving the region.

Pakistan is not new to mediation between the two Gulf rivals. There have been at least four major and minor initiatives since the 1980s. Pakistan first attempted its hand in mediation in the Middle East rivalry during the Iran-Iraq war, later in 1997 a meeting of the leaders of Iran and Saudi Arabia took place. held in Islamabad on the sidelines at an OCI Summit, and President Musharraf also tried to work on the matter in 2003/4, but his efforts did not progress because he was seen too close to the United States. The most recent initiative was in 2016 when the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the army chief, General Raheel Sharif, tried to get involved after tensions arose between the two sides after the execution of Saudi Shiite cleric Baqir Al-Nimr . On that occasion, Saudi Arabia did not encourage the initiative.

Former Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, who was in office at the time of the last initiative, said Pakistan had a personal interest in the rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Speaking at a round table conference organized by the Islamabad Policy Institute (IPI) on & # 39; Mediation in the Persian Gulf: Initiatives, Strategies and Obstacles & # 39 ;, noted that Pakistan has strong credentials for that role, but at At the same time there are great challenges including a deep distrust, Saudi Arabia fears about the growing Iranian influence and the regional power game.

“This is a timely and historic initiative. However, we must be realistic because of the difficult and complex problems involved in this rivalry, ”Chaudhry said, adding that if these disputes were not addressed now, global politics would further deepen the abyss.

The geopolitical situation and all the parties that realize its vulnerability make the moment of the initiative more propitious, he said.

The former Foreign Secretary proposed that Prime Minister Imran Khan, during the trip, warn the leaders of both countries about the consequences of the war; seek a minimum common agenda on which the effort can be advanced; offer to organize a summit or high-level leadership meeting of both countries in Pakistan; and renew good offices in both countries. The minimum agenda, he said, could be an understanding about not attacking each other and uninterrupted oil traffic.

Pakistan's former ambassador to Iran, Mr. Asif Durrani, noted that common sense had prevailed with Saudi Arabia after realizing that the war in Yemen was not on its way, even after four years. He stressed the need for confidence-building measures between Iran and Saudi Arabia for the peace effort to progress.

Professor (Dr.) Qandeel Abbas said it was necessary to change the narrative about the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia from a sectarian to a power answer.

Arab Affairs analyst Ali Mehr said Prime Minister Khan could, at best, play the role of a messenger between the two countries. He warned that the role and influence of the US UU. In Saudi Arabia, they could avoid any progress in the initiative. He suggested that the prime minister should focus exclusively on finding some solution to the Yemen war. In addition, he proposed that Pakistan join with Iraq and Oman to make a greater effort of rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

IPI executive director Professor Sajjad Bokhari said that due to his legitimate political, economic and security interests in the region, Pakistan needs to work for peace there.

Posted on Dawn, October 11, 2019

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1510204/pm-begins-visit-to-iran-saudi-arabia-tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will embark on a mediation trip between Iran and Saudi Arabia on Saturday, officials said.
