WASHINGTON: "We have to remind the cashmere that they are not alone in the world," says Kamala Harris, one of the leading Democratic candidates for the US presidential elections in 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are tracking the situation. It is necessary to intervene if the situation demands it, \u201dhe said in a recent statement. His comments are even more significant because he is of Indian descent on his mother's side.<\/p>\n

So far, three important presidential candidates have spoken in Kashmir: Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris. All three are members of the United States Senate and have great chances of being on the Democratic ballot by 2020, which may have two names on this list, one for president and one for vice president.<\/p>\n

And if the repeated offers of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to mediate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir are also counted, the number of US presidential candidates who express concern for Kashmir increases to four. So far, Trump is the only Republican candidate for 2020.<\/p>\n

Kamala Harris's comments are more significant because she is of Indian descent from her mother's side.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On Saturday, Senator Warren reminded India that "the rights of the people of Kashmir must be respected." And Senator Sanders said that India's action on August 5 to annex Kashmir was "unacceptable."<\/p>\n

He also urged the Trump administration to "speak openly" and support "a peaceful resolution backed by the UN that respects the will of the Kashmir people."<\/p>\n

Another American Indian legislator, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, joined 13 of her colleagues in the House of Representatives to write a joint letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, asking him to lift the restrictions he had imposed on Kashmir.<\/p>\n

Last week, a panel of the United States Senate attached an amendment to a finance bill that requires India to end its blockade and curfew in the Kashmir valley and completely restore communications links to the valley occupied.<\/p>\n

Commenting on these arguments, President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan said at a seminar in Washington last week that "there is a palpable change" in the US position on Kashmir.<\/p>\n

Indian repression in the occupied valley has forced the international community, particularly the Americans, to look more closely at this 72-year dispute, he added.<\/p>\n

Marvin Weinbaum, director of the Afghanistan, Pakistan program in a group of experts from Washington, the Middle East Institute (MEI), agreed with Mr. Khan's assessment, as did co-moderator Raza Rumi. Prime Minister "Modi has delivered a gift to Pakistan by bringing the issue to the forefront as he had never done before," Weinbaum said. "This has put India on the defensive."<\/p>\n

The issue also featured prominently at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) last week, where President Trump spoke on this issue in joint briefings with the prime ministers of India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n

On three different occasions, including one in which Modi was also sitting next to him, President Trump repeated his offer to mediate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. He did, knowing that Mr. Modi does not like to hear this word "m" and has publicly rejected his offers in the past.<\/p>\n

But as Weinbaum and Rumi pointed out in this MEI seminar on Kashmir, the US media are well ahead of the United States government by condemning Indian annexation and serious human rights violations in Kashmir in India.<\/p>\n

"This is important because for more than 70 years, Pakistan has been trying to get the world's attention to the Kashmir problem … with limited success," Weinbaum said.<\/p>\n

"And when Pakistan has tried to drive the problem, either covertly or openly, it failed."<\/p>\n

President Masood Khan, who accompanied Prime Minister Imran Khan to UNGA to highlight Kashmir's problem and then came to Washington for similar meetings with lawmakers, officials, journalists and other Americans, said attitudes were changing around the world.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists at the Pakistani embassy, \u200b\u200bKhan said similar pressures were also building up in other world capitals, particularly in Europe and China.<\/p>\n

Mr. Khan said that international pressure had revived his "hope that India will be forced to resolve this problem peacefully and in accordance with the wishes of the people of Kashmir."<\/p>\n
