The problem has been described as a "problem of scarcity in the midst of abundance" in South Asia, despite the large transboundary rivers, residents in many places must stand in line to get limited supplies of drinking water.

According to the report, water also presents geopolitical challenges in the region; While there are bilateral agreements in the Indus between India and Pakistan, and Ganges between India and Bangladesh, water is a potential weapon in cross-border disputes, as countries have sometimes threatened to cut off flows due to outbreaks of violence in territories where dispute. In addition, China, from where the headwaters of several important rivers are located, has been building hydroelectric dams that have caused political friction, particularly with India.

Pakistan has the fourth highest rate of water use in the world, but at the same time the country is close to being classified as "scarce water."

Part of the underlying challenge is that the country lacks adequate infrastructure to deliver potable water to its population. In addition, because most of the country's water comes from a single source: the Indo system, it runs the risk of interruptions due to extreme weather events, which will only become more pronounced as a result of climate change.

The region is home to about a quarter of the world's population, but it has less than five percent of the world's renewable water resources. The low availability of water per capita and a high relative level of water use make South Asia one of the regions with the most water scarcity.

In addition, water storage is low according to world standards, which makes it difficult to manage floods and droughts that affect the region and are expected to increase with climate change.

The issue of transnational tension can be seen in the classification of "terrorist attacks" as the second main risk in the region.

According to Greenpeace, "man-made environmental catastrophes" took third place, as the region is home to three of the four most polluted countries in the world: Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Fifteen of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India, with Dhaka also on the list.

The fifth risk, "energy price shock," was classified as the main country-level risk in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The classification reflects the fact that there is a growing demand for energy in South Asia as populations and economies grow, however, the region is a net importer of crude oil.

Posted in Dawn, October 6, 2019

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1509279/water-crisis-major-risk-to-business-in-south-asia-wef

ISLAMABAD: The water crisis is the biggest risk for doing business in South Asia, according to the World Economic Forum (EMF).
