Johnson & Johnson has agreed to a $ 22.4 million settlement in Ohio that is believed to have fueled the opioid addiction crisis.

Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday they will pay $ 22.4 million to settle claims in two areas of Ohio.<\/p>\n

J & J became the fourth pharmaceutical company to file a claim prior to a federal court trial against several Cleveland manufacturers and distributors scheduled for later this month. <\/p>\n

The case is considered a lawsuit for more than 2,600 lawsuits by state and local governments pending throughout the country.<\/p>\n

J & J said in a statement, "This agreement will allow the company to avoid resource demand and testing uncertainty as it continues to pursue meaningful advances to resolve the company's opioid crisis."<\/p>\n

"The company recognizes that the opioid crisis is a complex public health challenge and is working to help communities and people in need," he added.<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids died from 400,000 overdose in the United States from 1999 to 2017.<\/p>\n

J & J, who previously sold Duragesic and Nucynta painkillers, said it was not responsible for the agreement.<\/p>\n

The company will pay $ 10 million to Cuyahoga and Summit counties, reimburse $ 5 million in legal and other costs, and provide $ 5.4 million to nonprofits operating opioid-related programs in the county.<\/p>\n

Mallinckrodt Plc completed a $ 24 million payment on Monday in the same two counties. <\/p>\n

Endo International Plc and Allergan Plc also agreed with the two counties in August to avoid trial.<\/p>\n

Remained defendants in a federal trial on October 21 included McKesson Corp, AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc and Henry Schein Inc.<\/p>\n

OxyContin manufacturer Purdue Pharmaceuticals LP under pressure in a lawsuit in September filed for bankruptcy protection.<\/p>\n

Some plaintiffs' lawyers compared the opioid case with state lawsuits against the tobacco industry, resulting in a $ 265 billion settlement in 1998.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the Oklahoma judge ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $ 551 million a week to fuel the opioid epidemic by deceptively marketing addictive painkillers.<\/p>\n

Purdue Pharma and Teva settled claims for $ 275 million and $ 88 million, respectively, by the Attorney General of Oklahoma. <\/p>\n
