Pakistan's Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has banned analyst Hafeezullah Niazi from appearing on any television channel for 30 days for his alleged "defamatory" statements against Senator Azam Swati, which emerged Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The decision was made based on the recommendations provided to Pemra by the Complaints Council of the authority, according to a press release issued on Monday.<\/p>\n
"Mr. Niazi in a program on Geo News<\/em> on July 6, 2019, he had made certain accusations against Senator Azam Swati that the channel could not corroborate before the Complaints Council, "said Pemra's pamphlet.<\/p>\n I declare that Geo News<\/em> he had been given "enough time" to "prove the truth of the comments made by that analyst," but the channel had failed to provide a satisfactory answer.<\/p>\n The channel was directed to issue an apology within seven days "for issuing unfounded \/ defamatory comments" that Pemra said violated its code of conduct.<\/p>\n If the channel does not do so, a fine of Rs1 million will be imposed, the press release added.<\/p>\n Facing a case in the Supreme Court for the accusation of having influenced the transfer of former Islamabad police inspector general, Jan Mohammad, Swati submitted his resignation as Minister of Science and Technology to Prime Minister Imran Khan in December.<\/p>\n He was later appointed federal minister for parliamentary affairs in a reorganization of the federal cabinet in April.<\/p>\n At a press conference in July, Swati had commented that the media had no right to make unfounded accusations against any individual.<\/p>\n He had talked about how Niazi had stated during the program that he (Swati) faced an insurance fraud case in the United States. He said the baseless accusation had damaged his credibility.<\/p>\n Swati had said at the time that he had filed a case against Niazi, as well as Geo TV<\/em> with Pemra and he intended to file a defamation suit against them claiming Rs1 billion in damages. <\/p>\n In addition, he said that Niazi would have to apologize to the viewers on the same show to avoid further legal action or prove the accusation. <\/p>\n Swati had said that he had gone to the United States in 1978 and remained there until 2001.
