KARACHI: Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Syed Ali Zaidi said on Saturday that the funds from the Karachi package of Rs162 billion recently announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan will only be released after adopting a financial discipline and monitoring policy. <\/p>\n
Speaking as a principal guest at a "Bio-Economy-Future of Pakistan" seminar organized by the FPCCI, he said that the federal government would not like to see these funds sink without achieving results. <\/p>\n
The minister said he had been fighting for Karachi and had also submitted many suggestions to the cabinet and even personally approached Prime Minister Imran Khan. <\/p>\n
The system, he said, was so corrupt that when he took the initiative to clean up six large nullahs in the city, he knew that most of the "kachra kundis" were sold and that it was a big deal. <\/p>\n
But the most surprising revelation made by the minister was related to the cost of removing garbage from city areas to a site full of land. <\/p>\n
Mr. Zaidi said that the cleaning contract for the main nullahs of the city was granted to FWO (Border Works Organization) and, according to his calculation, the cost per ton was around $ 6.5 only. <\/p>\n
Similarly, the minister said that the people of Bahria who helped him take out the garbage from the nullahs had a cost per ton of about $ 6.5 per ton. <\/p>\n
However, according to the minister, if the garbage is first removed to the garbage transit stations for drying purposes and then to a site full of dirt, the cost is $ 10 per ton. But, he added, the cost of the Sindh government to dispose of garbage reached $ 28 per ton. <\/p>\n
The minister said that of two weighing machines on the site full of dirt, only one was running and each truck carried an average load of 35-40 tons of garbage. He also said that a truck on the site full of dirt was registered for four trips and this is how the funds are leaking and looting.<\/p>\n
