Pakistan decided to keep the main border terminals open on the border with Afghanistan, it emerged on Saturday, in a partial change in the government's decision to close all border crossings during elections in the neighboring country.<\/p>\n
The government announced on Thursday the closure of all border crossings with Afghanistan from September 27 to 28 to strengthen security in view of the fourth presidential election to be held in the war-torn country on Saturday. The restriction would apply to all transboundary movements, except for emergency patients.<\/p>\n
But a Foreign Ministry statement issued Friday night said Pakistan had received a request from the Afghan Ministry of Defense "on short notice" to facilitate the border and open border crossings during presidential elections scheduled for Saturday. <\/p>\n
"Despite the security issues throughout [the] border, Pakistan will continue to support its Afghan brothers, "said the FO." Therefore, it has been decided to open the main border terminals to facilitate [the] Afghan citizens movement across the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. "<\/p>\n
According to the statement, the request has been granted to allow Afghan citizens to exercise their right to vote during presidential elections.<\/p>\n
The presidential elections in Afghanistan, which take place weeks after the collapse of the peace process between the United States and the Taliban, have been overshadowed by fear of Taliban violence on the day of the vote.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued last month, the Taliban promised to interrupt the polls. They have denounced the electoral process as a "simulated process." The election campaign has also been marred by violence. One of the demonstrations that President Ashraf Ghani, the main contender, had to address was attacked, while a vice presidential candidate was also attacked.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/pre>\n<\/pre>\n
