ISLAMABAD \/ KARACHI: The daughter of an Afghan citizen in Karachi and the grandson of a resident of South Waziristan, known for his strong opposition to the polio vaccine, are the last victims of the deadly virus, emerged Sunday. <\/p>\n

Both children have not yet seen their first birthday. With the addition of these cases, one of each of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, the total number of victims of this year's paralyzing disease has reached 62, the highest since 2015.<\/p>\n

Twelve cases were reported in 2018, while only eight children had tested positive for the virus in 2017.<\/p>\n

On the last case of KP, an official of the polio virology laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, who requested anonymity said: "It was a clear case of rejection."<\/p>\n

The victim was a 10 month old boy. The case was detected in South Waziristan. <\/p>\n

"The boy's grandfather was against the polio vaccine," he said, adding that his father was said to be a worker in Dubai.<\/p>\n

Tally breaks five-year record with 62 victims <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the last case reported by Sindh, the official said an eight-month-old girl was found infected with the virus in the Orangi area of \u200b\u200bKarachi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe boy, whose father is an Afghan citizen, is a resident of Sector F-11, UC-1, Orangi Town, Karachi West District. The girl was well before developing a high fever, followed by weakness in both lower extremities, on August 20. According to her mother, she was taken to Dr. Mohammad Yar at the Shoaib Medical Center where she was given medication. The doctor had notified the child as a carrier of the polio virus on August 24. But since the incubation time of the virus is almost three weeks, it was finally confirmed that the child was paralyzed due to the polio virus, "he added.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for the emergency operations center for poliomyelitis in Sindh said the boy had a routine dose of polio. He said they were investigating how he had received doses during polio campaigns. He said the boy had little immunity; "That is why repeated vaccination of the oral polio vaccine is necessary."<\/p>\n

Another official said the girl's EPI card, which contained details of the vaccines, revealed that she had breached the Penta-II vaccine. It was said that the girl had no travel history and that her father, who had an Afghan national identity card, lived in Karachi for years.<\/p>\n

Of the 62 cases of polio reported during the current year, only 46 cases were detected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) alone. Six cases were found in Sindh, while Baluchistan and Punjab reported five cases each.<\/p>\n

According to the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the World Health Organization on polio eradication, KP is an important barrier to polio eradication efforts in Pakistan. He called the situation caused by the parallel structure of polio in the "crises" of the province.<\/p>\n

According to the recommendations of the advisory group, a copy of which is available with Dawn, KP has stood out as the main reason behind the increase in polio cases in the country. The cusp evaluation body stated: "The KP Emergency Operations Center is not aligned with the federal EOC, since the functions and responsibilities of KP EOC are not clear."<\/p>\n

TAG recommended a full restart of the KP polio program, noting that the provincial polio program has failed to identify roles and responsibilities with "two simultaneous but different strategic approaches that are used with distant action plans."<\/p>\n

As KP \u200b\u200bshares the greatest burden of the total number of cases reported during the year in the country, the advisory group acknowledged that the merger of federally administered tribal areas (Fata) with KP and false finger marks are important challenges, but noted that the Communication strategies being used by the KP polio program "were not fit for that purpose." There are only two countries in the world, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where polio cases are still reported. Pakistan remains under a travel restriction related to polio imposed by WHO because since 2014 every person traveling on board must carry a certificate of vaccination against polio.<\/p>\n
