Sarah Michelle Gellar, the beloved face of Buffy Summers by millions of film fans Buffy the vampire slayer<\/em> franchise, took to Instagram on March 14 to share some truly devastating news. The long awaited Buffy<\/em> reboot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale<\/em>was canceled by Hulu.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The reaction to the news was immediate. Fans were devastated, lamenting that the show’s revival meant so much to them and wondering why Hulu had decided not to move forward with the Buffy reboot. Thanks to People’s interview with Gellar, we now know the answer: a Hulu executive who hates Buffy and who didn’t see or believe in the reboot’s vision.<\/p>\n "We had an executive on our show who not only was not a fan of the original, but he was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entire series and that it wasn’t for him,” Gellar shared with People. \u201cThat’s very difficult when you’re taking on a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not only to the world, but also to Chlo\u00e9 and me. [Oscar-winning Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, who was attached to direct and produce the reboot]. That shows what an uphill battle we’ve been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you he didn’t see it.\u201d<\/p>\n Worse yet, Gellar and Zhao only learned of the revival’s cancellation during two very significant moments in their lives. Gellar received the news during the premiere of her new film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come<\/em>at the SXSW Film and TV Festival. For Zhao, it was just before the weekend when she attended the Oscars for Hamnet<\/em>where she was nominated for Best Director.<\/p>\n While Gellar expressed surprise at the cancellation of the Buffy<\/em> Upon reboot, Zhao told Variety that she was "not surprised” by Hulu’s decision.<\/p>\n Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale<\/em> was revealed in February 2025, with a pilot order at Hulu and will be handled by 20th Television and Searchlight Television. It would have introduced a new killer, played by skeleton crew<\/em> Ryan Kiera Armstrong will star alongside Gellar. While the full plot of the reboot has not been revealed, it’s safe to speculate that Gellar, as Buffy Summers, would pass the torch of her vampire slayer duties to Armstrong. However, with the cancellation, it’s unlikely we’ll ever know the full picture.<\/p>\n Original series creator Joss Whedon, who faced accusations of fostering a toxic workplace and misogyny on the set of the original series, was not involved in the show’s reboot.<\/p>\n While the reboot is currently canned, Gellar doesn’t want the cancellation to diminish fans’ love for Buffy<\/em> <\/em>and what it means to them.<\/p>\n "Buffy<\/em> It is timeless. And the one thing I want all these fans to know is that the legacy is still there, and this doesn’t diminish it. It doesn’t change it. "That legacy is still there, for them.”<\/p>\n It’s surprising that, in an age where entertainment seems to be driven by nostalgia and endless sequels, the full involvement of the original star and an Oscar-winning director isn’t enough to give Buffy a chance to return to screens. Hopefully, Gellar and Zhao don’t give up and their next attempt won’t be thwarted by an executive who prides himself on never having seen the show.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
