And what did you do? <\/strong>What about Azdupal?<\/strong> He connected the DJI Romo vacuum cleaner to the PS5 controller.<\/p>\n

why?<\/strong> Because he told the Verge, a New York-based technology news publication, that it sounded like fun.<\/p>\n

Okay, everyone do what they want.<\/strong>. So how did he do this?<\/strong> He used Claude Code, an AI coding assistant, to reverse engineer how a household robot vacuum cleaner communicates with DJI’s remote cloud servers.<\/p>\n

Wow, you’re losing me. <\/strong>To be honest, I’m losing myself too. See, Azdoufal is a software engineer and head of AI strategy at a vacation rental company. He knows how to do this. But what’s interesting is what happened next.<\/p>\n

What happened next? He’s probably lying on the couch, controlling the vacuum cleaner with a joystick.<\/strong> \u2013 It actually sounds like fun, even if it slightly negates the whole point of robots.<\/strong>. <\/strong>He discovered that he could not only control his own robot, but also access data from other robot vacuum cleaners.<\/p>\n

What kind of data is it?<\/strong> It offers live camera feeds, microphone audio, and maps from nearly 7,000 devices across 24 countries.<\/p>\n

tinker tailor <\/strong>vacuum cleaner <\/strong>spy!<\/strong> Although unconsciously. But yes. Azdoufal discovered a back-end security bug that could mean an entire web-connected vacuum\/spying device could be spying on its owners without them even knowing.<\/p>\n

unbelievable! What did he do with that power? <\/strong>As I said, he took his findings to the Verge. One of the reporters provided Azdoufal with the serial number of a DJI Romo vacuum cleaner he had just been testing for review. Within minutes, Azdoufal could see it cleaning the reporter’s living room, with 80% battery life remaining, and had it generate and transmit a floor plan of the house.<\/p>\n

It’s really terrible. Is it possible that there could be a more sinister actor than Azdoufal? <\/strong>Are they using these robot vacuums to spy on us?<\/strong>? <\/strong>that <\/strong>Chinese company Shenzhen Da-Jiang Innovations Sciences and Technologies Ltd (DJI) initially told the Verge that the issue had been "fixed,” but according to Azdoufal, DJI did not fix all of the vulnerabilities he discovered. After the Verge published its report, DJI also contacted Popular Science and said the issue had been "resolved.” <\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course they did.<\/strong> But this incident clearly highlights the alarm and fear surrounding smart home devices and robots, and how they can become targets for hackers. Or already\u2026<\/p>\n
