Now he’s changed things up with this surprising, funny, and vaguely disappointing film. The Love That Remains is a portrait of a fractured family and a fractured marriage, using dreamy piano scores, fantastical fantasies and whimsical sequences alongside serious, serious scenes of emotional pain, giving it a slightly disconcerting but decidedly intriguing new comic tone.

Pálmason’s visual and compositional sensibility is as overwhelming as ever, with stunning images of the Icelandic landscape. But it is flavored with a new tone of sustained and playful seriousness, until it finally transforms into a tragic spectacle of male loneliness. In some places the film doesn’t have the weight and impact of his previous work, but it’s certainly compelling.

This is the story of Maggi or Magnus (Sverrir Gudnason), who works on a trawler. He is now divorced, or at least separated, from his artist wife Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir), who creates large canvases, works with metal, photographic projects and land art, and often works outside their home on land owned by the family. They have two sons and a daughter, whose grandfather is played by Pálmason’s long-time lead actor Ingvar Sigurdsson, who makes a cameo appearance. They enjoy shooting arrows at humanoid targets mounted on poles. It turned out to be a very dangerous pastime.

Poor Magnus always shows up and asks to hang out with his now supposedly estranged family and meet their kids. At one stage they go on a swim-trip-slash-picnic and Magnus has a mesmerizing upskirt vision of Anna standing over him. Is that actually happening? Or only in his confused, lonely, excited imagination? However, Anna was clearly very angry with Magnus and, against her better judgment, took pity on him and allowed him to stay with her and the children. Because Magnus has no idea how to manage his post-breakup life and is paying a terrible price. She started to hate him.

Or is it her? This kind of difficult emotional reality is always softened and modified by ingenious visual invention. Magnus takes it upon himself to kill the wayward rooster he keeps on his land because Anna complained about its aggressive behavior. This scene speaks of Magnus’s own frustrated and diminished masculinity. This is followed by a dream sequence, inspired by a scary movie on TV that Magnus fell asleep in, in which this rooster, enlarged to monstrous size, returns for revenge. It’s pretty fun. But it may not be funny enough to completely succeed with its heartbreaking moments.

There is also another dream moment. Anna and the obnoxious Swedish art dealer who supported her work meet a terrible end. A sword lands Pythonesquely from the sky, right next to the sword target of a child wearing a medieval helmet. Meanwhile, an old mine from World War II appeared near Magnus’ trawler. This was another metaphorical flourishing of risk. The effect is gentle, sympathetic, uplifting, and often very elegant and indirect. But it doesn’t give us the full, real pain of damaged love.

<남아있는 사랑>screened at the Cannes Film Festival and will be shown in UK cinemas from March 13.

meCelandic filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason gave us the haunting historical drama Godland and the challenging and bizarre thriller A White, White Day.
