Wolff wanted Epstein to support writer Stephen Elliott, who is suing the founder of the Shitty Media Men List, a crowdsourced Google Doc detailing anonymous misconduct claims against dozens of men in the media industry.

According to emails released from the so-called Epstein files, Wolff wrote to Epstein: “I have always thought that the way out of this situation is through concrete examples of individuals successfully confronting their own persecution. “If his story is solid, he may be worth supporting.”

At first, Epstein didn’t move. In some cases, convicted child sex offenders and elite groups have strategized on how to blunt the power of the #MeToo movement and the women who promoted it.

“So many men are obsessed with me, reaching out to me and asking when the madness will stop,” Epstein wrote to one recipient whose identity has been redacted in December 2018. (The Guardian quotes most of his emails, texts and contact details as written, with adjustments made for clarity.)

“It’s fun,” Epstein added.

Elliott did not respond to a request for comment. In a September 2018 essay, Elliott said she was shocked to learn she had been accused of rape by a "loud list of media men,” denied the allegations of wrongdoing and denied having had a sexual relationship with anyone who worked in the media. Elliott and Donegan, now a columnist for the Guardian, reached an agreement in 2023.

“I had no idea that Epstein was aware of this incident,” Donegan said in an email. “I learned of his exchange yesterday morning.” "But now, after reading the conversation between Epstein, Wolff, Stein and Elliott, I can say that it is no mystery to me why someone like Mr. Epstein would be interested in a lawsuit against me and why he would want to help with that lawsuit. I think the emails speak for themselves.”

Stein, who was not involved in Elliott’s lawsuit and declined to speak on the record, resigned from the Paris Review in 2017 following a workplace investigation by the Shitty Media Men List. At the time, Stein said the sexual activity was consensual but that his actions were "an abuse of my position.”

Some of Epstein’s interactions with his rich and famous associates have previously been made public. But the release on Friday of 3 million additional records relating to the financier, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, widened the window on Epstein’s efforts to track and respond to the #MeToo movement. It also provides a startling picture of many prominent people who wanted to complain that the movement had gone too far against Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor.

In a series of emails in November 2017, Epstein and celebrity publicist Peggy Siegal expressed surprise at the speed with which #MeToo was destroying the reputations of men like Charlie Rose, Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner and Louis CK.

"Charlie, Harvey, Brett. She added: “You have suffered for years and now you are the least in this witch hunt.”

In another email exchange between the two, Epstein complained that he did not understand why the reporter for the Page Six article, which had called Epstein a "wronged billionaire pedophile,” was so hostile. Siegal advised Epstein to donate to women.

"MeToo crazy people want blood and death. When the Harvard Crimson asked Chomsky in 2023 about his relationship with Epstein, Chomsky said in part, "I’ve never stopped to talk about close friends who spent years in prison and then were released. That’s a very normal thing in a free society.”

Wolff and Epstein also appeared to respond to the #MeToo movement in December 2017. Because Wolff was worried that "this new round of Woody” (ostensibly in reference to the resurfaced allegations against Woody Allen) would "pull him into the general Harvey pool of despising and shunning him.”

“These are strange times.” Epstein answered. “I still have two more friends left.”

Wolf did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Wolff’s apparent suggestion that defendants file lawsuits has proven prescient, as defamation lawsuits have become a major feature of the backlash against #MeToo. As of last year, nearly a fifth of the more than 400 cases supported by the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, a post-MeToo organization that helps people who have survived sexual harassment in the workplace, involved defending people accused of defamation.

Epstein also emailed Joi Ito, a prominent technologist, about #MeToo. “With all these people getting arrested for harassment, my reputation has gone up a little bit and I’ve been getting requests for advice and stuff every day,” Epstein boasted in a November 2017 email.

Ito, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, lost his job as director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Institute in September 2019 after admitting to receiving more than $1 million from Epstein.

“In any conversation with Epstein, I have never been involved, have never heard him say anything, and have never seen evidence of the horrific acts of which he is accused,” Ito said in an August 2019 statement. “However, I take full responsibility for any errors in judgment.”

An investigation by Buzzfeed News found that Epstein may have been most involved in efforts by famed scientist Lawrence Krauss to defend himself after Krauss, a star in atheist circles and a professor at Arizona State University, reportedly forcibly kissed a woman, groped her and made a sexist joke. Krause denied all the accusations against him, calling them "false, misleading and defamatory charges.” He suggested that people’s obsession with celebrities was to blame.

Krauss was told by a Buzzfeed News reporter and an Arizona State University professor that he forwarded Epstein emails, discussed conversations with university officials, and even wanted Epstein to actually investigate a lawyer Krauss was planning to hire.

Lawrence Krause. Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images

“I received advice from a somewhat infamous friend before and after my BuzzFeed experience.
