Gilchrist got the opportunity to play for the home team and made his first-class debut in the 1992\u20131993 season. He was selected as Phil Emery’s backup. Gilchrist was included in Australia’s ODI squad for the 1996 series against South Africa. He replaced the injured Ian Healy. He became the 129th player to make his ODI debut for the Australian national cricket team.
