It is very interesting. ” ethics The Valentina Mella newspaper and researchers at the University of Sydney said in a statement.

<picture class="c-picture" data-cid="site/picture_element-1588460561_9213_5465" data-cdata="{"asset_id":19938751,"ratio":"*"}"></picture>

        Image: University of Sydney

Amazing discoveries were made between 2006 and 2019 with the help of citizen scientists and independent ecologists who observed koalas' behavior in the wild. Two licks per second. They recorded 46 cases of koalas drinking from trees both during and after the rain. Koalas were reported to drink alcohol whenever it rained. According to Mella, one of the reasons scientists haven't noticed this before is that people are less likely to go out when the weather is bad. Marsupials seem to prefer soft parts of trees.

Koalas are considered vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation for Nature, which tracks endangered species. It was devastated by a massive forest fire that hit Australia at the end of last year. Nearly a third of all koalas were thought to have been erased in New South Wales, which was the hardest hit by the fire.

The koala stopped in hot and dry conditions such as fueling the flames. When wildfires hit Australia across last year, photos and videos of koalas reaching people spread widely.

Even before the recent fire, Mella's previous study found that koalas are struggling due to climate change. In 2017, koalas stood at the camera to drink beverages in artificial waters set up by researchers, a very rare behavior for animals who consume most of their lives on eucalyptus trees.

<picture class="c-picture" data-cid="site/picture_element-1588460561_4247_5466" data-cdata="{"asset_id":19938804,"ratio":"*"}"></picture>

Koala drinking from a new bath
Kate Wilson

At that time, Mella and her colleagues thought the action was due to the higher temperatures and changing rainfall patterns drying the leaves that the koalas eat. Now she and co-authors of her new paper believe that low rainfall can be another direct factor.

Mela is currently raising money to continue research and establish more gas stations for koalas. She hopes that the drinking station placed on the tree will allow the koala to cool down safely while the surrounding world continues to heat up.

Koalas lick tree trunks, quenching thirst when it rains, and scientists have just learned.
