The measures take place after security forces violently took off last Monday from protesters at three bridges of critical points in central Baghdad. At the end of the day, six anti-government protesters were killed and more than 100 injured.

The growing security repression reflects the government's intransigence and reduction options for protesters who have been on the streets of Baghdad and in the main cities of southern Shia for weeks. The authorities closed Internet access and blocked social networks several times in the middle of the demonstrations.

Protests without leaders point to the entire political class of Iraq and demand government reform established after the US-led invasion in 2003. Security forces have used real ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas in an effort to quell the protests

On Sunday, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq urged the country's politicians to chart a way forward and proposed a road map, saying time is of the essence.

In a statement, it presented a series of short and long-term measures to address the crisis, including electoral reform and a series of anti-corruption measures. As immediate measures, he requested the release of all peaceful protesters detained since October 1, initiating a full investigation of the kidnapping cases and prosecuting and punishing those responsible for the excessive use of force.

Amnesty International said the Iraqi authorities should immediately control the security forces.

"The Iraqi government has a duty to protect the right to life of its people, as well as to gather and express their views. This bloodbath must stop now, and those responsible must be brought to justice," he said. Heba Morayef, of Amnesty International. Director of the Middle East and North Africa.

"All government promises of reforms or investigations sound empty as security forces continue to shoot and kill protesters," he said.

The White House also issued a statement on Sunday night calling to stop violence against protesters.

"The United States is seriously concerned about the continuing attacks against protesters, civic activists and the media, as well as restrictions on Internet access in Iraq," the press secretary's statement said. “Iraqis will not stay out while the Iranian regime drains its resources and uses armed groups and political allies to prevent them from peacefully expressing their views. Despite having been the target of lethal violence and denied access to the Internet, the Iraqi people have made their voices heard and called for elections and electoral reforms. "

The United States called for "the Iraqi government to stop violence against protesters and fulfill the promise of President (Barham) Salih to approve electoral reform and hold early elections."

The most immediate demand of the protesters is the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi. He has held the position for just over a year and refuses to resign.

On Sunday, security forces closed roads near Khilani Square with concrete barriers one meter high, trying to prevent protesters from reaching historic Tahrir Square in Baghdad, the epicenter of protests and the Sanak Bridge.

At least 19 protesters were injured when security forces used tear gas to repel them, according to police and hospital sources.

In the southern city of Nasiriyah, security officials and doctors said 31 people were injured in clashes outside the direction of education when security forces threw tear gas at protesters trying to prevent employees from reaching the building in downtown the city. Among the injured were two students from the school, officials said, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to the regulations.

On Saturday, five protesters were shot dead with real ammunition, while the sixth was killed by a direct blow to the head from a tear gas canister, medical and security forces said.

Protesters were pushed back from the three bridges that cross the Tigris River to the heavily fortified green zone, the seat of government. Protesters have tried to break through almost daily.

The deaths occurred when protests intensified in the afternoon when protesters tried to return to the bridges. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with regulations.

Protesters complain of widespread corruption, lack of job opportunities and poor basic services, including regular power outages, despite Iraq's vast oil reserves. They rejected government proposals for limited economic reforms and instead called on the country's political leaders to resign, including Adel Abdul-Mahdi.

"We consider the peaceful protests of our people as one of the most important events since 2003," Abdul-Mahdi said in a statement on Saturday that he promised to meet the demands of the protesters of powerful reforms. He added that electoral reforms will be presented soon along with "a major reorganization of the government" in response to protests against the sectarian system imposed in 2003, although the statement did not provide further details.

Abdul-Mahdi reiterated an earlier order prohibiting security forces from using excessive violence, such as live rounds, against peaceful protesters in a meeting with President Barham Salah and the president of Parliament, Mohammed Halbousi, on Sunday.

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1516060/un-mission-in-iraq-proposes-roadmap-for-ending-upheaval

The United Nations mission for Iraq on Sunday proposed a road map of the country's social turmoil, while Amnesty International said that Iraq's repression against anti-government protests has become a "bloodbath." Iraqi security forces put concrete barriers in central Baghdad in an effort to hinder and block the movement of protesters.
