The previous two instances occurred last month when protesters attacked police officers and victims, both teenagers, survived their injuries.

Without a political solution on the table, officers have had to fight violent protesters and are now hated by large groups of the deeply polarized population.

Immediately after Monday's shooting, crowds of locals gathered to throw insults at agents who responded with pepper gas and made multiple arrests.

The police have defended their tactics as a response provided to protesters who embraced throwing bricks and gasoline bombs, as well as tearing apart pro-China businesses and hitting opponents.

But an independent investigation into the police has become a central demand of the protest movement, with public anger fueled by weekly videos of controversial police tactics and aggressive interactions with locals.

In an incident that caused a fuss, a police officer on Friday night shouted to the protesters that he and his colleagues were "opening a bottle of champagne" after the student's death.

The force said that the officer was later reprimanded for his language.

Both the non-elected leader of Beijing and Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, have rejected an independent investigation, saying that the current city police watchman lives up to it.

But last week, in an embarrassing setback, an international panel of experts appointed by the authorities to advise the control body said it currently did not have the capacity or resources to conduct such a large investigation.

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1516057/hong-kong-police-shoot-protesters-as-flashmob-rallies-target-rush-hour

A Hong Kong police officer shot at masked protesters on Monday morning, hitting at least one in the torso, while the anger caused by the recent death of a student spilled on the rush hour trip.
