Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday launched the "largest needs-based scholarship program."<\/p>\n
Addressing the launch ceremony, the prime minister said the program will bring a great change in society. He said that the best way to reduce poverty is to provide opportunities for students from poor families.<\/p>\n
He regretted that an educational system of the colonial era worked in the country and criticized the multiple educational systems that exist in Pakistan. "Three parallel systems – half English, half Urdu and religious seminars – were running in society, which was a great injustice and nobody tried [fix it] or talk about it, "he said. <\/p>\n
"According to the last update I received, some 800,000 students are studying under the Middle English system, 30 million under the Urdu medium and 2.5 million students are enrolled in Madrassahs," he said.<\/p>\n
He said that under the program 50,000 scholarships will be offered each year.
