ISLAMABAD: The merchant community on Tuesday observed a closing strike across the country to protest against budget measures designed to document its transactions, with wide strips of urban markets attending the strike call. <\/p>\n
During the day, talks between the government and the merchant community were interrupted, ending hopes of an early end to the strike. <\/p>\n
Markets are expected to remain largely closed on Wednesday (today), as a group of five merchant associations have called for a two-day protest against the recently introduced measures aimed at expanding the tax network and ensuring that retailers pay your taxes <\/p>\n
The strike coincided with the launch of the anti-government "Azadi march" by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl. <\/p>\n
The call to strike came after the failure of a round of negotiations between the leaders of the merchants and the authorities, led by the adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, and the president of the Federal Board of Revenue Shabbar Zaidi <\/p>\n

In general, Punjab responded well to the strike call as merchants kept their businesses closed in most markets and shopping centers at the request of All Pakistan Anjuman-i-Tajiran (APAT). <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a complete closure strike was observed in Balochistan, including Quetta, where all the bazaars, shops, business centers, squares, markets and commercial establishments remained closed throughout the day. <\/p>\n
The commercial areas of the provincial capital had a deserted appearance since most of the vehicles remained off the roads. <\/p>\n
The strike was also observed in Dera Murad Jamali, Sibi, Hub, Dera Allahyar, Khuzdar, Kalat, Zhob, Loralai, Chaman, Pishin, Turbat, Gwadar, Panjgur, Dalbandin, Noshki and other cities in the province. However, on the outskirts of the city of Quetta, some stores opened in the afternoon. <\/p>\n
