ISLAMABAD: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced Monday that it approved a $ 75 million loan for a project in the Sindh education sector. <\/p>\n
In a statement issued here, the Manila-based lending agency said the project aimed to improve the quality, accessibility and gender responsiveness of the secondary education system and infrastructure in Sindh. <\/p>\n
Pakistan has 22.8 million children out of school, 28{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} are in Sindh. The province also has the second lowest gross enrollment rate and net enrollment rates at all educational levels in the country. <\/p>\n
The secondary education sector faces challenges ranging from obsolete and dilapidated infrastructure, lack of access to school, especially for girls, and poor quality of teaching and learning, especially for core subjects, which include language, math and science. <\/p>\n
\nThe loan will be used to improve the quality, accessibility and responsiveness to gender of secondary education. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
"Given the strategic location of the province, the economic importance and the young workforce, Sindh has the potential to become a key driver of economic growth and development in Pakistan," said Norman LaRocque, ADB Senior Education Specialist for Asia Central and Western <\/p>\n
He said efforts to improve the education system and infrastructure in the province were important to ensure that graduates have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute productively to the country's growth and development. <\/p>\n
The Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project will finance the construction of some 160 new high school blocks within existing government school complexes, mainly in 10 districts in southern Sindh. The new blocks will feature gender-sensitive features, such as separate sanitation facilities and separate prayer rooms for women. They will also be equipped with solar energy. <\/p>\n
The high school blocks will be administered by private partners under the government's educational management organization program. The project will also improve teaching capacity in five key subjects, namely English, math, biology, chemistry and physics, through the introduction of a training and mentoring program for teachers using information and communication technology and laboratory equipment of last generation in selected schools. <\/p>\n
The province's secondary education exam system will improve by increasing its emphasis on critical thinking, by providing new technologies and developing skills for the advisors and staff of the exam board. <\/p>\n
The total cost of the project is $ 82.5 million, with the government of Pakistan contributing $ 7.5 million. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. <\/p>\n
The ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient and sustainable Asia and Pacific, while maintaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. In 2018, it committed to new loans and donations worth $ 21.6 billion. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members, 49 from the region.<\/p>\n
