She has lived in the UK for more than two months a year for 21 years and considers Manchester her second home.

On the other side of the road you can smell the stables. The BBC has contacted six of the UK's largest continental Christmas markets (Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Belfast, Glasgow, Oxford), experiencing business losses due to further preparation and storage, product shipments and timing of product launches. Last October deadline.

This market is not for European traders to make money and head home. According to a survey of local government associations, Christmas markets bring visitors to distant cities, encourage spending in bars, restaurants and hotels, and contributed £ 500 million to the economy in 2017.

What happens to Brexit?

Remove keywords & # 39; appropriate & # 39; from Brexit plan

More expensive?

Anja is worried that if the pound falls further due to Brexit, trading will be more difficult this year and in the next few years, because he has to buy goods in euros.

"We are afraid this will happen because we think there will be real problems for the market to succeed. He says he brought everything early, given the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

"We tried to bring all the trucks to the UK faster than usual," he said.

"We ship all wooden stalls and many decorations in Germany in addition to all the products we will be selling here in the coming weeks."

Authenticity is key

In the UK, it's difficult to secure warehouse space and it's more expensive than usual, but Kirk says using it is the "only way to get started in time."

Allan Hartwell runs Christmas markets in Belfast and Glasgow, and about a third of his traders travel around Europe. He said additional plans are the only way to overcome this year's uncertainty.

                 Image copyright
Belfast City Council

"The success of this Christmas market is about the authenticity you have. For example, there are genuine German merchants selling traditional Bratwurst sausages or French people selling traditional crepes."

"And it's about authenticity. That's what the public wants to see."

Consumer confidence

Alan said most traders heading for the Belfast Christmas market would take stock through the UK, so they would double their papers or regulations once they entered the UK and crossed to Northern Ireland.

Like most European traders, he was reassured that the Brexit extension could not do so this year.

Allan believes that the biggest impact on the market this year is whether consumers are confident enough to consume.

But he thinks that by introducing regulations as part of the new process, it will surely collapse next year. Many traders will reconsider their position.

Anja and Kirk agree that if the UK ends with no trade or difficult Brexit, the European stall holder will travel to the UK market next year. And that means not only less Glueine and Christmas cheers, but also potential damage to our winter economy.

Image copyright Getty images Downtowns across the UK will change in the coming weeks as wooden stalls are built and visitors from Europe arrive to bring our continental flavor to our streets.
