ISLAMABAD: A nine-month-old boy from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KP) has become the last victim of the polio virus. <\/p>\n

The new case has been reported by Sarae Norang of the Lakki Marwat district, said an official at the Polio Virology Laboratory at the National Institute of Health (NIH), requesting anonymity. <\/p>\n

The boy was affected by the virus because his parents were anti-vaxxers who had not allowed a single dose of the vaccine to be administered, according to the official, "the parents do not administer the vaccine to their children because they believe the polio vaccine It is haram or makes your children helpless. \u201d <\/p>\n

With this new case confirmed, the number of polio cases for 2019 has reached 77.<\/p>\n

In 2018, 12 cases were reported from Pakistan and in 2017 eight cases were reported. <\/p>\n

Provincial data for the current year so far show that 57 cases of KP have been reported, that is, 23 cases from the Bannu district, 11 cases from the Lakki Marwat district, eight cases from the North Waziristan district, seven cases from the Torghar district, two cases of Hangu district and one each of Charsadda, DI Districts of Khan, Shangla, Bajaur, Khyber and South Waziristan.<\/p>\n

In Sindh province, eight cases of Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana and Jamshoro have been reported. <\/p>\n

In Baluchistan province, seven cases have been reported from the districts of Qila Abdullah, Jaffarabad, Harnai and Quetta. <\/p>\n

And in the province of Punjab, five cases have been reported from the districts of Lahore and Jhelum. <\/p>\n

On Thursday, the Global Polio Eradication Certification Commission announced that the second of the three types of poliovirus had been eradicated worldwide, according to a Reuters report. The World Health Organization called it a "historic step" towards a polio-free world. <\/p>\n

This means that only type 1 poliovirus continues to circulate after type 2 was declared eradicated in 2015 and type 3 this week. <\/p>\n

Global cases of polio have been reduced by more than 99{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} since 1988, but type 1 polio remains endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan. <\/p>\n

The Philippines said last month that it was planning an emergency vaccination campaign after polio emerged in the country and caused the first two cases of polio recorded there in 20 years, Reuters added. <\/p>\n

Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by poliovirus that primarily affects children under five. It invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis or even death. While there is no cure for polio, vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from this paralyzing disease. <\/p>\n

Every time a child under five is vaccinated, their protection against the virus increases. Repeated vaccines have protected millions of children against polio, allowing almost every country in the world to become polio free.<\/p>\n
