ISLAMABAD: The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Information, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, said it is unrealistic to demand an affidavit from the government by the higher court that Nawaz Sharif's life will be in danger if he remains behind bars. <\/p>\n
Addressing a press conference on Saturday night after the court granted bail to Nawaz Sharif, she said: "How can the federal government declare that it will be safe inside the prison or otherwise?" <\/p>\n
Dr. Awan said life and death were in the hands of the Almighty, and the federal government maintained before the court that its decision should be based on merit. <\/p>\n
She said the government believed in the law and the courts exercised their constitutional right. <\/p>\n

The special assistant said there was no precedent in the past that the executive was asked to take responsibility for the health of a prisoner. "We are not responsible for your old ailments, including blood pressure and heart problems." <\/p>\n
She said the government would want to see such rapid trials for all prisoners under trial and in all cases. "We hope this new trend is applicable to all cases," he added. "The government wants to introduce reforms in all sectors, including the economy, the judiciary, legal procedures and the social sector, but that is only possible with the help of opposition members in the National Assembly and the Senate." <\/p>\n
Dr. Awan declined to comment on the government's next course of action and said it will be decided as the situation arises after the next case hearing on Tuesday. <\/p>\n
She denounced media reports that the government was facilitating Nawaz Sharif's departure from the country. <\/p>\n
"The government only facilitates the operation of the courts and that decision will be taken by them on merit." <\/p>\n
