KARACHI: Depressed demand in the automotive sector has led to a 27 percent drop in the total import of fully and semi-hit kits (CKD \/ SKD) to $ 261 million in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n
Of the total imports, the arrival of CKD \/ SKD kits for heavy vehicles dropped to $ 67 million from $ 114 million, followed by $ 175 million for cars from $ 216 million and $ 18.8 million for two-wheelers from $ 27 million in 1QF19.<\/p>\n
In addition, local car sales fell 39 percent to 31,017 units in 1TF20 while truck and bus sales fell to 874 and 196 units from 2,049 and 267 units respectively.<\/p>\n
Sales of Honda and Suzuki bicycles fell 12pc and 11pc to 235,116 and 5,018 respectively, while those of Yamaha decreased 1pc to 6,212 units.<\/p>\n
United Auto Motorcycle and Road Prince Motorcycle sales also fell 26{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} and 35{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} to 81,012 and 29,399 respectively; while Ravi's sales decreased by 54 percent to 3,497 units.<\/p>\n
The president of the Association of Automobile Parts and Accessories Manufacturers of Pakistan, Capt Muhammad Akram, told Dawn on Thursday that assemblers have decreased imports of parts and accessories due to the massive drop in overall sales in the automotive sector.<\/p>\n
The assemblers are also worried about the inventory accumulated in their plants and dealer network due to the weakening of sales.<\/p>\n
Akram said that after a bad first quarter, vehicle sales during July-October are likely to remain under pressure, as this period is already called "fall time," since buyers generally delay purchases in anticipation of buying. a new model in the first two months of next year.<\/p>\n
He said that in the second quarter, future sales and sales from January 2020 onwards will also depend on the political environment, crop situation, prices and economic measures.<\/p>\n
A Japanese automotive assembler also said that the massive inventory of parts and accessories, as well as cars not sold in showrooms and factories have accumulated due to low sales.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, a car dealership said car assemblers make import orders for CKD \/ SKD depending on the demand of their authorized showrooms.<\/p>\n
As sales are forecast to remain silent in the second quarter, assemblers are placing orders based on the slow reserve trend of locally assembled vehicles.<\/p>\n
He said the government is proud to control the growing current account deficit after a negative trend in imports.<\/p>\n
However, the decrease in the import of raw material for the automotive and local manufacturing sector is an alarming signal for the country, since it would result in job losses as well as affecting the collection of government revenues.<\/p>\n
He added that the government would also face a deficit of revenues from the automotive sector due to the fall in sales.<\/p>\n
In addition, car sales during the last fiscal year ended down by 209,630 units from 216,786 in fiscal year 2018. Truck and bus sales in fiscal year 19 were located at 5,828 and 935 units compared to 9,331 and 762 units<\/p>\n
In the two- and three-wheel segment, sales of Honda bicycles fell to 1,114 million units compared to 1,150 million in fiscal year 2018, while those of Suzuki and Yamaha increased to 23,352 and 23,610 units of 21,724 and 21,810 units respectively.<\/p>\n
