ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to establish a customs authority and develop a data bank to collect information on smuggling and similar mechanisms to stop the entry of unpaid items into the country. <\/p>\n
The decision was made by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday while chairing a high-level meeting to review and control smuggling. <\/p>\n
After informing the media after the meeting, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, said the databank would be developed with the input of all agencies and departments in districts that were areas tribal administered by the federal government and bordering areas of Balochistan. <\/p>\n
Dr. Awan said that the current system worked in isolation and that all relevant departments operated in silos without any coordination, possibly reluctant to share information with each other. <\/p>\n
"Almost everyone, from the coast guard patrolling the coastline to the customs department, civil and military intelligence agencies, etc., did not share their information and records with each other, with the result that effective smuggling control did not it was possible, "he added. <\/p>\n
\nChaired by Imran, the meeting was informed that Pakistan suffers an annual loss of $ 6.94 billion due to smuggling<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
"We are prepared to reduce human interaction to the maximum level and all departments located at the borders and areas prone to smuggling will provide their contribution to the core group," said Awan, adding that "we are moving towards automation, this is the modern approach. " <\/p>\n
The prime minister received information on the measures taken to discourage smuggling and other illegal trade modes and to implement best practices already existing throughout the world, in the country. <\/p>\n
She said that Prime Minister Khan had also granted approval for the establishment of the customs authority to end the misuse of power within the customs department. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe system currently is that all cases are resolved at a lower level, either to impose sanctions or even for confiscated assets; this Customs Directorate will become an authority and the relevant stakeholders and departments will remain in close coordination with this authority, "he added. <\/p>\n
The central group would also be established under customs authority. <\/p>\n
He described the measure as the only serious effort made in the country's history to curb illegal trade and smuggling and said that smuggling was like a termite for the country's economic growth. <\/p>\n
The special assistant said the measure is expected to build trust among investors, including legal and industrial importers, since the gray economy would be largely limited. <\/p>\n
The meeting was informed that Pakistan faced an annual loss of around $ 6.94 billion, including $ 3.470 million in terms of lost revenue due to smuggling, but the real impact on the economy was much greater as local production It became expensive while selling cheaper contraband products on the market. <\/p>\n
"This has led to deindustrialization in the country over the years," he said and noted that the prime minister had addressed the issue of smuggling with the provinces and the army a few months earlier. <\/p>\n
The committee was informed that the customs department had observed a 56 percent increase in revenue collection, as strict measures had been taken to control smuggling. <\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Prime Minister Mahmood Khan, Retired Interior Minister Brig Ejaz Ahmed Shah, Law Minister Barrister Farogh Naseem, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan and senior officials from the relevant departments.<\/p>\n
