LUCKNOW: A man digging a grave in northern India last week found a newborn girl buried alive, the last case that highlighted female infanticide in the country. <\/p>\n

Hitesh Sirohi had gone to bury his own daughter, who died a few minutes after her birth on Wednesday, when her shovel hit a clay pot, police said in the state of Uttar Pradesh. "When he realized that there was a newborn girl inside, he rescued her immediately and dialed … to ask for help." <\/p>\n

Sirohi told the India times<\/em> He found the baby wrapped in a cloth and crying. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt one point I thought that my daughter had come to life. But the voice actually came from the pot, \u201dhe told the newspaper. <\/p>\n

The newborn was taken to a hospital where she is receiving medical attention, police said, adding that a local politician was paying her expenses. <\/p>\n

India has long struggled with female infanticide, which has become widespread due to parents' preferences for children, which are seen as investment and heirs, while girls are seen as a responsibility. <\/p>\n

India is trying to close the gender ratio gap with strict laws, as the country has poor results with 940 women per 1,000 men, according to the 2011 census. <\/p>\n

Prenatal sex determination was banned in 1994, but families still use illegal methods or devices to discover gender and terminate pregnancies for unwanted offspring. <\/p>\n

A 2011 study in the British medical journal The Lancet found that up to 12 million girls had been aborted in the last three decades in India. <\/p>\n

In January, a three-week-old girl was found buried alive in the state of Rajasthan after locals heard her cry from a shallow grave, but died after a few weeks in a hospital. <\/p>\n

In 2017, police in the western state of Maharashtra recovered 19 female fetuses from a sewer near a clinic. <\/p>\n

A doctor was arrested and accused of illegally aborting female fetuses for parents desperate for a child.<\/p>\n
