Dyson, headquartered in the UK, best known for its vacuum cleaner, scrapped an electric car construction project.<\/p>\n

Led by inventor James Dyson, the company said engineers would not reach the road because they developed a "fantastic electric car" but it was not "commercially practical."<\/p>\n

Sir James said in an email to all employees that the company did not find a project buyer.<\/p>\n

The department has 500 British workers.<\/p>\n

Dyson had planned to invest more than 2 billion pounds in the development of "radical and other" electric vehicles, which began in 2016, said the car will not target the mass market.<\/p>\n

Half of the money is used to build cars, half to develop electric batteries.<\/p>\n

In October 2018, Dyson announced plans to build a car at a new factory in Singapore. Next year, the production line was operational in 2021 and was expected to be completed as the first vehicle.<\/p>\n

The company had planned to invest \u00a3 200 million in the UK's research and development and test track facilities. Most of that money has already been spent and Dyson said it will use the site for other projects.<\/p>\n

The remaining funds for the EV project will still be used to develop other products, including battery technology, Dyson said.<\/p>\n

The first car is already developed and under test.<\/p>\n

But in an e-mail Thursday, James said Dyson is shutting down its electric vehicle facilities in the UK and Singapore.<\/p>\n

The project employed 523 people, 500 of them in England, and Sir James praised the "huge" achievement.<\/p>\n

Sir James wrote, "This is not a product breakdown or a team breakdown that is difficult to digest after hearing this news."<\/p>\n

But he said, "We worked very hard throughout the development process, but we can no longer see how it is commercially viable."<\/p>\n

"The team at Dyson has developed a fantastic car. The approach was unique, sticking to our philosophy."<\/p>\n

He said the company is trying to find other roles in the household department that make things like vacuum cleaners, fans and hair dryers.<\/p>\n

Sir James said Dyson will continue to study the battery technology used in the car.<\/p>\n

"Our batteries will give Dyson profound benefits and lead in new directions."<\/p>\n

"In short, our desire for investment will not diminish and we will continue to deepen our roots in the UK and Singapore," he said.<\/p>\n
