In addition, he asked the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the Sindh police and provincial authorities for failing to implement the ban in spirit.

Last week, the bank ordered provincial authorities to submit a report before October 8 on legislation against the manufacture and sale of gutka and mainpuri in Sindh. During today's proceedings, both the health department and the police officers were present in court to answer questions.

Dr. Ghulam Haider testified that the Jinnah Hospital Outpatient Department (OPD) received more than 300 cases of cancer daily, of which 70 percent included patients with mouth cancer. He said that patients with mouth cancer mainly comprised university and school students, as well as young people who worked in factories.

The bank asked the doctors to also participate in the procedures tomorrow, when the court will analyze the recommendations for the legislation. The petitioners said they would provide the court with more detailed records and information on the matter so that effective legislation can be made.

Meanwhile, Judge Panhwar ordered that the gutka, mainpuri and mawa factories be sealed in the city and criticized the police officers allegedly involved in their attempt to earn millions from trade.

The judge also regretted that police officers who are penalized for misconduct appear to be suspended for a few days and then reinstated.

The hearing will resume tomorrow.

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1509708/sindh-high-court-orders-strict-legal-action-against-gutka-sellers

The Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered Tuesday that cases be registered against those who sell gutka under Section 337-A (shajjah, intentionally causing damage) of the Penal Code of Pakistan.
