NEW YORK: The transport company Uber Technologies Inc is launching in the air in New York City, where users with a little money to spare can book helicopter flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport through its applications. <\/p>\n
The company announced its Uber Copter offer on Thursday, saying flights to and from Lower Manhattan would be available to all Uber users. Uber made the function available to its premium members in June. <\/p>\n
The approximately eight-minute flight will cost between $ 200 and $ 225 per person and includes ground transportation on both sides of the trip. Passengers can bring a small suitcase and watch a safety video before takeoff, similar to that of an airplane. <\/p>\n
The flights are operated by HeliFlite Shares, a licensed company, and Uber prices are roughly compared to those of competitors offering helicopter trips to JFK. <\/p>\n
For now, Uber trips that transport passengers to the helipad in Manhattan are only available from the southern tip of the island. <\/p>\n
Uber says the service is intended to reduce travel times, but when Reuters tested Copter on Wednesday, a trip from its Midtown office to the airport took 70 minutes, including a subway ride to downtown and two Uber trips from and towards the helipad. That is almost the same as it would have taken in a regular taxi in moderate traffic. <\/p>\n
However, an Uber spokeswoman said Thursday that the trip was not realistic as part of the commercial launch, as the Copter option is only shown to customers located in the geo-fenced Lower Manhattan area. <\/p>\n
"Uber Copter will not appear as an option in the application if it is outside the geovalla because it would not provide time savings," the spokeswoman said. <\/p>\n
But Uber could gradually expand the Manhattan pickup area, said Eric Allison, head of Elevate, Uber's air transportation program. <\/p>\n
"Helicopters are certainly expensive and will be a premium product, but we believe we can offer a fairly accessible entry point with Uber Copter," Allison said during an interview on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
JFK is one of the largest airports in the country and car trips from congested Manhattan can take one to two hours, while public transportation takes between 50 and 75 minutes. <\/p>\n
Given the growing concern about congestion and vehicle emissions, Uber expects its NYC Copter project to pave the way for Uber Air, an electric take-off taxi service for "vertical take-off and landing."<\/p>\n
