LAHORE: Nawab Town police on Sunday recorded a murder case against four police officers who allegedly tortured a young man during a raid on his home in the town of Ayub Chowk in the Nawab Town area on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
Measures were taken against Assistant Assistant Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Younis, police officers Yasir, Ansar and the driver of the Arshad police van after dozens of locals organized a protest against the death of Ashfaq, 18, in a police raid.<\/p>\n
Police torture: a product of Pakistan's authoritarian political values?<\/em><\/p>\n Protesters blocked a road, burned used tires and shouted slogans against the police, demanding action against the assault team of the Nawab Town police station. The situation remained tense in the area for hours, as protesters refused to disperse until the record of a murder case against police officers involved in the raid.<\/p>\n SP denies allegations of torture<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Subsequently, senior police officers arrived at the scene, held negotiations with the relatives of the deceased child and assured them that justice would be done.<\/p>\n Ghulam Rasool, father of Ashfaq, said in the FIR that a police team entered his residence in Ayub Chowk and hit some of his family members.<\/p>\n He said the police also subjected his son Ashfaq to severe torture with the butts of his weapons and sticks, leaving him seriously injured. Ashfaq was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, he said, adding that his son was a fruit seller.<\/p>\n It was the third incident reported in Lahore and the sixth in Punjab during the last month or so in which the police were charged with the death of a suspect. Clips of some of these incidents uploaded to social networks caused more shame to Punjab police.<\/p>\n Noting, the Punjab police inspector general, Arif Nawaz Khan, had issued a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for all field officers so that such incidents could be verified in the future.<\/p>\n A police source said the team at the Nawab Town police station had raided in a warning that a game lair was running in the area.<\/p>\n However, he admitted that in this particular incident, the police blatantly violated the POEs and raided the house without obtaining permission from the Nawab Town SHO, which resulted in the young man's death.<\/p>\n Saddar Division SP Ahsan Saifullah also confirmed Dawn<\/em> that the assault team violated the POEs. However, he said, police personnel were nominated in the FIR for not taking SHO's permission before raiding the "game lair."<\/p>\n To a question, he said, according to the assault team, the deceased boy suffered head injuries when he tried to flee. The SP denied the allegations of torture directed against its subordinates.
