NEW YORK: Any help from the United States to encourage bilateral discussions between India and Pakistan would help preserve the global order and serve to improve the security of Americans, says a letter signed by 35 US lawmakers. <\/p>\n
The letter, addressed to Kelly Craft, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, also conveys the concerns of the United States Congress about India's decision to annex occupied Kashmir, noting that it could lead to a clash between the two nuclear powers of South Asia, India and Pakistan. <\/p>\n
The letter asks the ambassador to inform Congress about the actions that the US mission to the United Nations and the Trump administration have taken so far to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe write out of concern with recent activity in the Kashmir region, amid growing tensions between the nations of India and Pakistan, both with nuclear capabilities. Maintaining peace and stability in this region is a matter of global security, \u201dthe legislators wrote. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs you know, last month the Indian government announced that it would review the legal status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Historically, the Indian constitution has granted a special autonomous state to the state. In late July and early August, India transferred 45,000 troops to the Kashmir region. By eliminating special status on August 5, the freedom of movement and communication of residents in the area was suspended. We are encouraged by recent reports that restrictions have begun to rise. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the United Nations begins its 74th session of the General Assembly, we encourage you to use the full weight of the United States Mission to the United Nations to encourage India and Pakistan to mitigate tensions bilaterally. Any assistance that the United States can offer to calm tensions in the region and encourage bilateral discussions between the two countries is of the utmost importance in ensuring the safety of Americans and preserving the global order. <\/p>\n
\u201cPlease let us know what actions the UN Mission and the administration will take to avoid further escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan. We appreciate your attention to these concerns and are ready to assist you in any way while representing the United States at the United Nations. \u201d<\/p>\n
