WASHINGTON: The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has said he will meet with the leaders of India and Pakistan in the next few days, while saying that "great progress is being made" to calm tensions between the two neighbors with weapons Nuclear power stations in South Asia. <\/p>\n
"I will see Prime Minister Modi and we will meet with the prime ministers of India and Pakistan," Trump said, adding: "And I think a lot of progress is being made there, a lot of progress." <\/p>\n
Trump made these comments Monday afternoon while answering a question about a joint demonstration that he and Modi plan to address in Houston, Texas, on Sept. 22. <\/p>\n
Although the Indian community in the United States describes this demonstration as a "great diplomatic victory" for India, President Trump's comments show that the leader of the United States is still interested in playing a mediating role between the two traditional southern rivals from Asia. <\/p>\n
Trump's announcement that he will meet with Indian and Pakistani leaders in the coming days confirms media speculation about an Imran-Trump meeting during the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York next week. <\/p>\n
Pakistani and Indian prime ministers are scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 27 and will be in New York next week. <\/p>\n
President Trump's UNGA schedule indicates that he could meet with Prime Minister Khan outside the general assembly while he is already planning to meet with Modi in Houston. <\/p>\n

However, reports in the Indian media suggest that Modi would prefer an appropriate meeting in New York or Washington, over an informal discussion during the Houston rally. This means that Trump will have two meetings with Modi within a week to discuss a topic, Kashmir, which Washington fears could lead to another war between India and Pakistan. <\/p>\n
The other part of Trump's statement, "much progress is being made," indicates that the United States has remained committed to the two neighbors despite New Delhi's often declared position that it does not accept international mediation in its disputes. with Pakistan <\/p>\n
This follows another Trump statement last week that he is willing to "help" India and Pakistan resolve the Kashmir dispute. <\/p>\n
The president of the United States offered for the first time to mediate between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir dispute on July 22 at a joint White House press conference with Prime Minister Khan. Since then, he has repeated this offer at least twice, even though Modi rejected the idea in his presence during a G7 meeting in France last month. <\/p>\n
Tensions between India and Pakistan reached a peak on August 5, when New Delhi unilaterally annexed Kashmir, revoking a constitutional guarantee that granted special status to the disputed territory. Islamabad condemned the measure as a further strengthening of an illegal occupation, degraded diplomatic ties and severed commercial ties with India. <\/p>\n
In addition to the president of the United States, Prime Minister Khan is expected to meet with other world leaders as part of his strategy to persuade the international community to pay more attention to India's actions in Kashmir.<\/p>\n
