Is the Earth unique?"

Tsiaras and his team worked with spectral data captured in 2016 and 2017 with the Hubble Space Telescope, using open source algorithms to analyze starlight filtered through the atmosphere of K2-18b.

They must have found a symbol of water vapor. Exactly how uncertain, but computer modeling suggested concentrations between 0.1 and 50{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5}.

By comparison, the rate of water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere is between 0.2{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} above the poles and up to 4{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} in the tropics.

There was also evidence of hydrogen and helium. According to the study, nitrogen and methane may also be present but cannot be detected with current technology.

Further research allows you to determine the cloud coverage and the proportion of water in the atmosphere.

First of many

Water is important for finding life because it partially carries oxygen.

"Life as we know it is based on water," Tinetti said.

K2-18b orbits a red dwarf star about one hundred billion kilometers away from the Leo constellation of the Milky Way, and is probably hit by more destructive radiation than Earth.

"This is likely the first of many discoveries about potentially inhabitable planets," said co-author UCL astronomer Ingo Waldmann.

"Because the super-earth like the K2-18b is not only the most common planet in our galaxy, but also the red dwarf star, which is a smaller star than the sun, is the most common star."

The next generation space-based star gaze tool, led by the James Webb Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's ARIEL mission, can depict alien planets in greater detail.

Scheduled for release in 2028, ARIEL will survey approximately 1,000 planets and perform a sampling large enough to find patterns and identify outliers.

"More than 4,000 extraterrestrial planets have been discovered," said Tinneti, "but we don't know much about their composition and properties. "By observing large quantities of planetary samples, we hope to reveal the secrets of their chemistry, formation and evolution."

    Source: AFP

Source Link : https://www.trtworld.com/life/water-found-on-possible-habitable-planet-29708?utm_source=other&utm_medium=rss

Scientists first detected water in the atmosphere of planets such as the Earth, orbiting distant stars.
