His last film, 2018’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, was an extraordinary, almost extraterrestrial experience that challenged audiences to examine how they think about time and memory. This doesn’t quite have that power, and is effectively a composite film, with some sections better than others. Although it climaxes with some breathtaking images and tracking shots, all of its constituent parts contribute to the overall effect of the film.

Resurrection may be a long night’s journey toward enlightenment at dawn. It ends at a club called Sunrise. It is also an anecdotal journey through Chinese history, culminating in a historical moment that continues to fascinate Chinese filmmakers as a way to collectively process their feelings about films through their films: New Year’s Eve 1999, a new century in which China, while clinging to old-fashioned political conformism, has come to optimistically embrace a new capitalism.

We are in a kind of alternate reality universe where humans have discovered that they can live indefinitely if they don’t dream. If you do not dream, it is an activity that burns you like a lit candle. Vigan leaves it to us to consider what this means for overpopulation. But there is one outlier, one dissident, one man with a dream. He is a divine monster called the Phantasmer (Jackson Yee), and the paradox is that through the ecstatic perception of the Phantasmer’s visions and dreams, he is able to reincarnate and resurrect into a variety of exotic underworld beings from various historical periods of the past century. And then a woman comes into his life. Is it the woman who perceives these events, or is it the Phantasmer who is doing it?

Occupying a kind of archaic silent film world at the turn of the century, he is a white-faced figure like the vampire Nosferatu, cared for by a mysterious woman (played by longtime Hu Xiaoxian performer Shu Qi). During World War II, he was involved in a violent rampage in a mirror shop, a shade of Welles’s The Lady From Shanghai involving the theremin. We flash forward 20 years and our time-traveling itinerant, Fantasmer, is in a remote winter temple, where he smashes a Buddha statue and encounters a bitter spirit.

Decades later, he becomes a crooked card sharpener who lures young girls into his scams against local gangsters, and finally we are on the threshold of a new century where Fantasmer meets another mobster, Mr Luo. The visuals of his vampiric fate and the film itself are taken to new heights.

This is a very mysterious film whose mystery extends to its title. In what clear transformative sense is “resurrection” taking place? Or is it just a constant blinking change of form? Is Phantasmer just a pulsating star in the distance of space, and could it explode or collapse on its own within a few hundred thousand years? Asking or answering these questions may not be the point of the film, and the enigmatic quality combined with the flashy visual effects may leave some viewers agnostic. I myself wasn’t sure about the silent film type effect. Still, it’s a really artistic work.

Resurrection screened at the Cannes Film Festival and will be shown in UK and Irish cinemas from March 13.

raini Gan’s new film is bold and ambitious, visually stunning, trippy and dizzying in its embrace of hallucinations and the heightened meaning of the unreal and dreamlike.
