In 2004, he became the council area youth president. He did not run for election because he left the party after some time. According to a leader of Maratha group Sambhaji Brigade, Patil was unhappy with the way the Congress party was handling protests against a controversial 2003 book titled "Shivaji: Hindu King in Muslim India” by James Laine. The book created discord among the Marathas by raising questions about Shivaji’s parents. As a result, important records from the Bandarkar Oriental Institute, which were helpful in researching the book, were destroyed. The incident resulted in numerous arrests. In an interview, his colleague said:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very disturbed and did not approve of the position taken by the government at the time, so he decided to leave politics and devote himself to social work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

To plan protests in support of Maratha reservations, he founded the Shivba Sanghatana group. In 2009, he joined the movement to secure employment and education for the Maratha minority. He received support from six of his close associates from Jalna district, including Pandurang Tarakh, the village sarpanch, Ramesh Tarakh, a doctor from Antarwali Sarati, Pradeep Solunke, a teacher from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (earlier called Aurangabad), and three of his oldest associates, farmers Shreeram Kurankar, Sanjay Katare and Dhananjay Duphake. They play an important role in the rallies conducted by Patil. They helped him make a rough travel plan, including giving his speeches and arranging accommodation and food. In 2013, he launched his first protest with a 13-day hunger strike in Shahgad in defense of Maratha reservations. He then went on a second hunger strike for 8-9 days in front of the Jalna police chief.<\/p>\n

Marathas protested in 2016 after a Maratha girl in Kopardi was raped and murdered by a gang. Patil also played an important role in these protests. Patil organized Marathas in the Marathwada region and brought them to the state capital for the Maratha Kranti Morcha protests in Mumbai in 2016-17. Patil held rallies across the country in 2021 following the Supreme Court’s decision to abolish Maratha reservations. This included three months of protests at Sasht-Pimpalgaon in Jalna district, where huge crowds came out in support of him. In August 2023, Maratha protesters came into the limelight during their hunger strike. Prime Minister Shinde persuaded him to call off the protest by promising to set up a committee to look into the possibility of awarding Maratha certificates to those belonging to the Kunbi caste. The police attempted to forcibly remove him from the protest site for four days. This led to a fight between Patil’s followers and the police. He staged another protest in September 2023, which ended after 16 days with Prime Minister Eknath Shinde drinking fruit juice.<\/p>\n

He has been asked by top government ministers and retired judges to wait until December 24, 2023. He accepted their offer, but warned them that he would go on strike again if their demands were not met by a set date. On December 26, 2023, he announced that he would go on hunger strike until his death at the Mumbai rally and Azad Maidan. Addressing the protest, Patil declared that he would begin an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on January 20, 2024. He said in a statement:<\/p>\n

It is difficult to suppress the Marathas. We will not return without a community reservation. I will leave my village in Antarwali in Jalna district on foot to reach Mumbai and join members of my community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On January 27, 2024, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had said in a proposal that 57 lakh Marathas with Kunbi background would be provided with Kunbi certificates. He also said that certificates would be provided to families of Marathas with Kunbi background by showing affidavits of relatives with Kunbi records. While canceling the Mumbai march on January 27, 2024, he said a judge would take up the case. He and his group later said they wanted to make some changes to the proposal. They also claimed that rejection of the petition would prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from addressing campaign rallies in the state for the upcoming assembly elections. He began another hunger strike on February 10, 2024. On the sixth day of the strike, his condition worsened and he was given medication through IV. In the interview, he spoke about his hunger strike and said:<\/p>\n

It was decided to suspend the strike for a month as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and DCM Ajit Pawar had requested a one-month period to complete the Maratha reservation report. I have made it clear to the state government that irrespective of whether the report is positive or negative, it must start issuing Kunbi caste certificates to the Maratha community. \u201cIf the state government does not provide protection to the Maratha community, we will resume the hunger strike again in a month,\u201d Patil told a gathering and warned the government that \u201cno minister of the present government will be allowed to roam freely in the state\u201d if the government goes back on its word.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
