ISLAMABAD: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party on Tuesday demanded chief election commissioner The immediate resignation of Sikandar Sultan Raja for failing to hold "free and fair” elections following accusations of electoral fraud arose.
The 71-year-old man Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said the CEC "had no right to remain in office for even a single day”.
Raja, a retired civil servant, was appointed head of the Election Commission in January 2020 by then Prime Minister Khan’s government. But Khan soon developed differences with him and began criticizing him. He redoubled his criticism after the overthrow of his government in April 2022.
PTI chief Gohar Khan told the media after meeting Khan in Adiala jail that the former prime minister asked him to demand Raja’s resignation. "After meeting Khan sahib today, the PTI is demanding that the CEC resign. He has no right to remain in office for even a single day,” said lawyer Gohar Khan outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where the PTI founder is imprisoned. "Since the CEC failed in its duties, we demand that the CEC resign immediately so that all investigations are impartial and fair and in accordance with the people’s mandate,” he said.
