The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to name the ground floor stand below the press box at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after Ravi Shastri. This was one of the decisions taken at Friday’s Apex Council meeting.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMumbai cricket is built on the foundations laid by our stalwarts,\u201d MCA president Ajinkya Naik said in a statement. \u201cIt is our responsibility to honor those who brought pride to the city and the country. The proposal to name the Level 1 stand below the press box after Ravi Shastri is a tribute to his immense contribution as a player, leader and coach.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shastri played domestic cricket for Mumbai before playing 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India. He was also the coach of India from 2017 to 2021, and during his tenure, India reached the semifinals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and faced a league stage exit from the 2021 T20 World Cup. It was under Shastri that India won its first Test series in Australia in 2018-19 and another title in 2020-21.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Besides honoring Shastri, the MCA has decided to name three gates of the Wankhede stadium after Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji. Sardesai scored 642 runs during the 1971 tour of West Indies. It was the first time India had beaten the West Indies in a Test series. Solkar is considered one of the best catchers in the game and his short leg skills are arguably unrivaled. Edulji is a pioneer in the women’s game and has captained India in 22 international matches.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cDedicating the gates of the Wankhede Stadium to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji ensures that every fan entering the stadium is reminded of the legends who shaped our glorious cricketing heritage,\u201d Naik said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
