Dilma Rousseff was born on December 14, 1947 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, daughter of teacher Dilma Jane da Silva and Bulgarian lawyer and businessman Pedro Rousseff. She has a brother named Igor and another brother, Zana, who died in 1977. Raised in a large house with three servants, Rousseff enjoyed an upper-middle-class childhood. She attended preschool at the Col\u00e9gio Izabela Hendrix and primary school at the Col\u00e9gio Nossa Senhora de Sion girls’ boarding school. Rousseff left the latter in 1964 to go to a coeducational public high school. In 1967 he joined the Workers’ Political organization, which split from the Brazilian Socialist Party. For her higher education, Rousseff first studied economics at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, but was expelled due to her guerrilla activity. He later graduated from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and began, but never completed, a graduate program at the State University of Campinas.<\/p>\n

After becoming a socialist, Rousseff joined the National Liberation Command, which promoted armed revolution against the Brazilian dictatorship. She promulgated Marxist politics among union members and through the newspaper The Piquet, which she edited. Rousseff’s brother-in-arms was Cl\u00e1udio Galeno Linhares, to whom she was briefly married. During his guerrilla years, he smuggled weapons and money and allegedly orchestrated robberies. He also led the VAR Palmares, a Marxist-Leninist political and paramilitary group. In early 1970, Rousseff was arrested by police in a S\u00e3o Paulo bar and was allegedly tortured for more than three weeks afterwards. She was then sentenced to prison, where she remained until the end of 1972. After a period of recovery and completing her studies in economics, Rousseff entered the Institute of Social and Political Studies, where she organized debates.<\/p>\n

Government Career, 1985-2010<\/h2>\n

In the early 1980s, Rousseff aligned herself with the newly formed Democratic Labor Party. Her first important government position was Secretary of the Treasury of Porto Alegre during the government of Alceu Collares, a position she held from 1985 to 1988. In 1990, after Collares was elected governor of Rio Grande do Sul, he appointed Rousseff president of the Economics and Statistics Foundation. She then became Secretary of State for Energy in 1993, a position she held for a year. After the end of Collares’ term, Rousseff returned to the Economics and Statistics Foundation, where she edited the magazine Indicadores Economicos.<\/p>\n

Rousseff served a second term as Secretary of State for Energy from 1998 to 2002, this time under Governor Ol\u00edvio Dutra.
