ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari called a joint session of Parliament on March 2, at the beginning of the new parliamentary year.<\/p>\n
A notification issued by the Secretariat of the National Assembly on Wednesday said that in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Article 54 read with sub-section (3) of Article 56 of the Constitution, the President summoned both Houses of Parliament to meet at the Parliament House in Islamabad on March 2 (Monday) at 10:30 am.<\/p>\n
Previously, a publication on the Presidency’s X account said that it had approved the summary of the session.<\/p>\n
The publication also said that the session would be convened at 3:00 p.m. on March 2. Subsequently, the National Assembly Secretariat issued its notification, in which the schedule was revised to 10:30 am.<\/p>\n
The session is convened as a continuation of the practice of a joint session held at the beginning of each parliamentary year.<\/p>\n
Under Article 56 of the Constitution, the President addresses both Houses of Parliament at the beginning of the first session of each parliamentary year.<\/p>\n
This will be President Zardari’s ninth address to a joint session of Parliament in his capacity as President.<\/p>\n
During his speech, he is expected to outline national priorities, democratic stability, constitutional supremacy and sustainable economic development.<\/p>\n
His speech is also expected to cover the regional and global situation, terrorism and the determination and commitment to eradicate it.<\/p>\n
It is also expected that President Zardari may be "tough” on the government as he has in the recent past criticized some of its policies and complained that it did not take into account ruling allies, including the PPP, in the decision-making process.<\/p>\n
A reflection of this stance was seen when the president recently returned some important government bills without his consent, despite them having been passed by both Houses of Parliament.<\/p>\n
