At least 500 protest incidents have erupted in Kashmir occupied by India since New Delhi stripped the region of its autonomy and imposed military repression more than three weeks ago, said a senior government source. AFP<\/em> on Wednesday. <\/p>\n The Himalayan Valley is under strict closure, imposed hours before India's decision to submit Kashmir to its direct domain. The movement is restricted and telephone and internet services have been cut. <\/p>\n The blockade, as well as the deployment of tens of thousands of additional troops to reinforce the 500,000 based in occupied Kashmir, was ordered amidst disturbance fears in a region where an armed rebellion has been waged against the Indian government since 1989 . <\/p>\n Watch: "We will not give an inch": India faces a challenge in "The Kashmir Gaza"<\/em><\/p>\n But protests have erupted, even in the main city of Srinagar, with the police using pellet guns and tear gas to disperse the crowds. <\/p>\n A senior government source said AFP<\/em> There have been at least 500 protests and stone throwing incidents since August 5, and more than half have occurred in Srinagar. <\/p>\n So far, almost 100 civilians have been injured, with another 300 police officers and more than 100 injured paramilitary soldiers, the official added. <\/p>\n "The number of protests could be much greater and greater without the current blockade," said the official AFP<\/em>, adding that "anger and public challenge is constantly increasing." <\/p>\n \u201cEfforts to alleviate conditions are made all the time, but nothing seems to be working for now. Nervousness is spreading in the security establishment. " <\/p>\n He added that the blackout of communications meant that even security forces were struggling to obtain information about rural areas. <\/p>\n Meanwhile, residents refuse to resume their normal lives in an act of defiance, a AFP<\/em> Srinagar reporter said. <\/p>\n While the authorities have reopened the schools, the students have stayed away.
