Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi wrote another letter to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Michelle Bachelet, directing her attention to the "serious deterioration of human rights and the humanitarian situation” in Kashmir occupied by India, said a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. on Friday.<\/p>\n
Qureshi, in his letter, highlighted the "context and consequences of the illegal and unilateral actions of India” on August 5, when New Delhi decided to revoke article 370 of the Indian constitution, stripping Kashmir of its special status. A strict blockade and a communications blackout were imposed in the area and Kashmir politicians were placed under house arrest.<\/p>\n
According to today’s press release, Qureshi’s letter "articulates Pakistan’s deep concerns” over human rights violations in the occupied Indian government in occupied Kashmir.<\/p>\n
"The letter underlines that the actions of India constitute flagrant violations of the UN Charter, the relevant resolutions of the Security Council, international law and solemn commitments of India,” says the press release.<\/p>\n
The foreign minister said it was important for the UN, as well as for the international community, "to ask India to rescind its unilateral actions, lift curfews and other draconian measures.”<\/p>\n
The letter will be shared with the UN Security Council, as well as with members of the world body, according to the statement.<\/p>\n
This is not the first time the chancellor has approached OHCHR on the Kashmir issue. I had written to him on August 4 and had a telephone conversation on August 8.<\/p>\n
Qureshi had also written to the president of the United Nations Security Council, asking him to convene an emergency council meeting to discuss the "illegal actions” of India that also "violate the UN resolutions on Kashmir.”<\/p>\n
China supported Pakistan’s request and, for the first time in 50 years, the UNSC convened a session on August 16 only on the Kashmir dispute.<\/p>\n
Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari had also written a letter to Bachelet about the use of cluster munitions by Indians through LoC and the use of violence against Kashmir by Indian forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
