The Department of Phytosanitary Protection of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research has said that the activity of desert lobster observed in Malir and the adjacent areas of Karachi is part of the migration of the creature from the summer monsoon breeding area to the coastal areas of Balochistan and does not pose any risk to the food supply.<\/p>\n

The technical director of the planting department, Muhammad Tariq Khan, said Sunday that the desert lobster flies during the day and settles at night, adding that migratory activity generally does not cause damage since locusts are not looking for food. <\/p>\n

Desert locust swarms have been seen in several areas of Karachi, including Sharea Faisal and Bahadurabad. The last time the metropolis suffered a lobster attack was in 1961.<\/p>\n

Khan explained that the desert locust's preferred habitat is the desert area. A sandy soil with moisture and vegetation is required for oviposition and reproduction.<\/p>\n

He added that the department was monitoring the situation closely and that the desert locust control teams were prepared to overcome any risk that the species might present according to technical guidelines.<\/p>\n

In Pakistan, the desert locust has two seasons and breeding regions: the winter-spring breeding zone located in the Baluchistan desert areas that prevails during February to June and the summer monsoon breeding zone located in the Tharparkar deserts , Nara and Cholistan, which takes place from June to November.<\/p>\n

This year, there is an increase in the population of desert lobsters in countries that are the potential habitat of the species from the West African region to the subcontinent. <\/p>\n

The Pakistani government since March 2019 has inspected an area of \u200b\u200b550,000 hectares and has secured 110,000 hectares of land and air spray areas in Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab. Due to preventive measures, the movement of the desert lobster was limited to the desert areas and could not attack the cultivated areas.<\/p>\n

Lobsters are grass hoppers with short horns. Desert lobsters from Africa and Asia are usually lonely, but spring rains cause a behavioral transformation that can lead to swarms of lobsters. A single swarm ranges from 100,000 to 1 billion lobsters.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/pre>\n<\/pre>\n
