Iran should come to the negotiating table with world powers and Gulf countries to seek a new agreement that will reduce regional tensions and revive its economy, a senior official in the United Arab Emirates said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Tensions in the Gulf have increased since attacks on oil tankers on a vital global sea route this summer, including the UAE coast, and a major assault on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
Washington blamed Iran, which denied being behind the attacks on global energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Iran said it had resumed uranium enrichment at its Fordow nuclear site, moving away from its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers after the United States withdrew.<\/p>\n
"A further escalation at this point is of no use to anyone and we firmly believe that there is room for collective diplomacy to succeed," said UAE Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash in a speech in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n
He warned against a "false choice" between war and the "defective" atomic agreement.<\/p>\n
The United States has imposed new sanctions on Iran since it withdrew from the pact as part of its "maximum pressure" campaign on Tehran.<\/p>\n
Gargash said the new talks with Iran should not only address the nuclear problem, but also address concerns about its ballistic missile program and regional interventions through power groups.<\/p>\n
These issues mean that regional countries would need to participate in the discussions, he said in an annual strategic debate in the UAE capital.<\/p>\n
The United Arab Emirates, which says that Iran is a destabilizing force in the region, backed the campaign of maximum pressure from the president of the United States, Donald Trump, against Tehran, but called for the de-escalation after the attacks.<\/p>\n
"I think there could be a path to an agreement with Iran that all parties could soon be ready to undertake. It will be long, and patience and courage will be required," Gargash said.<\/p>\n
He added that it was important that the international community be on the same page, especially the countries of the United States and the European Union, as well as the regional states.<\/p>\n
Washington says it expects the sanctions, which aim to stop all Iranian oil exports, force Iran to negotiate to reach a broader agreement.<\/p>\n
But Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has banned Iranian officials from holding such talks unless the United States returns to the nuclear agreement and lifts all sanctions.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/pre>\n<\/pre>\n
