During his tenure, he advised Modi on many legal issues as a Gujarat CM. In 2014, when Modi was elected Prime Minister of India, he appointed Murmu as Co-Minister of the Treasury. On March 1, 2019, Murmu was appointed Minister of Expenditure in India.
