The Pentagon has published its first images of the command incursion last weekend in Syria that led to the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and warned that the militant group may attempt to make a "retribution attack."<\/p>\n
The declassified, granulated and black-and-white aerial videos of Saturday's raid showed United States special operations forces approaching the complex and US planes firing at nearby militants.<\/p>\n
The most dramatic video showed a huge column of black smoke rising from the ground after US military bombs swept through the Baghdadi complex.<\/p>\n "It looks a lot like a parking lot, with big potholes," said Navy General Kenneth McKenzie, commander of the US Central Command, which oversees US forces in the Middle East.<\/p>\n McKenzie, informing the Pentagon reporters, said the idea of \u200b\u200bdestroying the complex was at least partly "to ensure it would not be a sanctuary or otherwise memorable."<\/p>\n "It's just another terrain," he said.<\/p>\n Baghdadi, an Iraqi militant who rose from the darkness to declare himself "caliph" of all Muslims as the leader of the Islamic State, died by detonating a suicide vest while fleeing to a dead end tunnel when elite special forces were They were approaching.<\/p>\n McKenzie said he brought two young children to the tunnel with him, not three, as had been estimated by the United States government. And we are postulated and prepared for that, \u201dhe said.<\/p>\n McKenzie did not back down or reject Trump's dramatic account of the final moments of Baghdadi, which the president delivered during a televised speech to the nation on Sunday. Trump said Baghdadi "died cowardly, crying, groaning and screaming." <\/p>\n When asked about Trump's account, McKenzie said: "On the last moments of Baghdad, I can tell you this: he got into a hole with two small children and was immolated while his people were on the ground."<\/p>\n "So you can deduce what kind of person is based on that activity […] I can't confirm anything else about your last seconds. I just can't confirm that one way or another. "<\/p>\n On Monday, army general Mark Milley, president of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also declined to confirm Trump's account, saying he presumed that Trump obtained that information from his direct talks with members of the elite unit that conducted the operation.
