The mode and methodology have been antidemocratic. People were humiliated and never consulted. "

Masoodi represents the National Conference, a powerful pro-Indian Kashmir political group whose leaders have been arrested.

Read: Kashmir and self-determination

Information war

Before the biggest change in Kashmir occupied on August 5, the authorities closed access to the internet, mobile and fixed telephone service and cable television for the 12.5 million people in the region.

The closure disrupted businesses and schools and demoralized people.

With the increasing international pressure to restore freedoms, authorities have begun to ease restrictions, eliminate roadblocks and restore landlines and some cell phone services. Students have been encouraged to return to school and businesses to reopen. But the cashmere have stayed at home, challenging or fearful amid threats of violence.

Authorities continue to limit internet access, saying it is likely to be used to organize protests and violence against India.

Protests and arrests.

Despite the siege of tens of thousands of government forces, hundreds of protests and clashes against India have erupted throughout the region. Government forces launched tear gas, shotguns and firearms to prevent demonstrators throwing stones from marching through the streets, leaving at least three dead and hundreds injured.

At least 4,000 people, mostly young men, had been arrested since the security shutdown was imposed in the first week of August. Indian authorities say at least 3,000 have been released.

Around 250 of those still detained have been transferred to several Indian prisons outside occupied Kashmir.

Report: Kashmir men tell the BBC about torture and beatings

Records show that around 300 of them are held under the controversial Public Security Law, which allows authorities to detain people for up to two years without trial.

Battle of the Supreme Court

The hopes of the Kashmir people rest in the Supreme Court of India, which will begin hearings in early November on petitions that challenge the validity of the repeal of Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to occupied Kashmir. A decision is expected within several months.

What does Modi plan?

The Modi government claims that the new status of occupied Kashmir gives its people rights that were denied under their previous special status, including the right to education, a minimum wage law and statutes that guarantee minority rights.

Modi says that the end of an insurgency against India would boost tourism in Kashmir, known for its impressive mountain views, and encourage foreign investment that would improve its economy.

Pakistan's response

Pakistan has reacted strongly to the changes imposed by India by degrading diplomatic relations with New Delhi and ending bilateral trade. It has also stopped trains, buses and postal services.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has strongly raised the issue at the United Nations, international human rights organizations and other forums. He says he will continue to provide moral and diplomatic support to cashmerers opposed to the Indian occupation.

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1514013/shops-shuttered-streets-deserted-as-occupied-kashmir-loses-special-status-and-is-divided

Stores and offices closed Thursday in Kashmir occupied by India and the streets were largely deserted when federal authorities formally revoked the constitutional autonomy of the area and divided it into two federal territories.
