Nearly 30 MEPs, mainly from far-right parties, will be the first international delegation to visit Kashmir occupied by India on Tuesday since the authorities imposed a security crackdown in August to support the end of the region's autonomy.<\/p>\n
While the Indian government supports the visit, the European parliament and the hierarchy of the European Union have not participated, which raises some diplomatic questions.<\/p>\n
Several European embassies in New Delhi were unaware of the visit until Monday.<\/p>\n
Kashmir, occupied by a Muslim majority, under the control of an uprising for 30 years, has been in the international spotlight since the New Delhi government movement to strengthen its control over the Himalayan region.<\/p>\n
"The delegation of MEPs is not on an official visit to India and came here at the invitation of a non-governmental group," said an EU official in India, who spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n
"We are not organizing any of your meetings." <\/p>\n
The group is dominated by right-wing deputies from Poland, France and Great Britain. They met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.<\/p>\n
They should go to occupied Kashmir on Tuesday and return on Wednesday from the visit that the Indian government said aims to give deputies "a better understanding of the cultural and religious diversity of the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh region."<\/p>\n
Fearing the riots, the government cut the telephone lines and the Internet and imposed a curfew close in many places after the autonomy of decades was over.<\/p>\n
The measures were softened recently, with telephone lines restored, but the population still does not have internet.<\/p>\n
